LONDON (AFX) - BAE Systems PLC is poised to clinch a 1 bln stg deal for the
supply of at least 30 Hawk jet trainers to the Royal Air Force, reported the
Sunday Telegraph newspaper without citing sources.
The highly controversial deal has been delayed because of wrangling within
the government over whether the contract should be put out to international
competition rather than being handed to BAE, said the paper.
The deal is expected to be announced before Parliament rises for the summer
break on Thursday. It will protect up to 2,000 jobs at the BAE plant at Brough,
Yorkshire, which is in the constituency of John Prescott, the deputy prime
minister, the paper added.
No one at BAE could immediately be reached for comment.

MANAMA (AFX) - Gulf Air is negotiating the purchase of regional jets for use
on its Gulf routes with Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer and Canada's
Bombardier Inc, the airline said.
President and chief executive James Hogan met with top Embraer executives
"to review opportunities for the introduction of regional jets into the
30-strong Gulf Air fleet, which currently comprises a mix of aircraft from
Boeing and (EADS unit) Airbus," a statement said.
"The flexibility offered by Embraer's smaller regional jets, which
accommodate between 70 and 100 passengers, will allow Gulf Air to operate higher
frequency services on its already strong intra-Gulf network," it added.
The PR chief of Gulf Air, owned by the governments of Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and
Oman, said the airline is in similar talks with Bombardier.
"We are still at the preliminary stage of negotiations, which have so far
focused on the type of aircraft, and leasing, maintenance and training terms,"
Ahmad al-Janahi said.
He did not say how many regional jets Gulf Air is considering buying, but
said the airline planned to double its fleet to 60 by 2009.
