24/2/2021 15:03 | You would lose the £5k. FCA requires brokers to close positions when they are 50% down - so if your margin is £10,000 then £5000 would be 50% Professional traders are not bound by the same terms. Potentially their losses can exceed their funds deposited with the broker. | thebull8
24/2/2021 14:48 | ...'If you don’t deposit more money the broker will automatically close your position and the £40,000 worth of shares are sold by the broker' ...and how much of your original 10k do you get back from the broker ? | red rook
24/2/2021 13:31 | Thats the clearest explanation I have seen yet Thebulls...many thanks | marvelman
24/2/2021 13:20 | Thanks Bull | mazarin
24/2/2021 12:30 | CFD/Spreadbets are basically leveraged bets. For example, IG offer 25% for retail investors to purchase shares in touchstone. So if I put down £10,000 this would actually represent £40,000 worth of shares. The broker buys the £40,000 worth of shares. The advantage is if the share price goes up 12.5% you have made £5000 profit. However if it goes down 12.5% you will have lost £5000. If you don't deposit more money the broker will automatically close your position and the £40,000 worth of shares are sold by the broker Essentially you're borrowing money to buy shares from a broker | thebull8
24/2/2021 11:31 | I’ve buying and selling shares for years and only ever bought what I can afford. I have no idea what CFD’s are and the idea of people not owning shares, betting on them going down and then walking away with some kind of a profit is entirely baffling to me. So I haven’t at all understood the current debate involving recent antics of IG and would be grateful for some simple explanation. Whatever the cause it’s obvious something was behind the latest fall, I put it down to lack of positive news and can’t imagine how IG whiz kids believe they could manipulate the SP, when the longer term picture remains so promising. Apologies for being so old fashioned. None of us are guaranteed profit and I stick to the notion of ‘only buy what you can afford to lose’ and look forward to an explanation. | mazarin
24/2/2021 08:56 | It's the margin requirements that are being amended on Friday 3pm not the closure of positions. Speaking to IG they said most customers are in a position that they have enough margin and won't be margin called on Friday. They said they were contacting customers who may be impacted first | thebull8
24/2/2021 08:24 | Paul always said the biggest risk was timing. I don't think he was considering dodgy spreadbet companies though! | spawny100
24/2/2021 08:23 | Why is the flow test news anymore important or is it the timing you are referring to buffy? | dunderheed
24/2/2021 08:17 | Hi Che7win, Two friends said they weren’t contacted by phone. Unless you were already paranoid, there isn’t an easily traceable record of the dubious behaviour. I spoke at length with and Spreadex and IG. The former played a straight bat. Nothing has changed with our margins sir. There are no plans currently to do so. We of course reserve the right..etc..etc. IG sad they had no plans to change the current margins but yes, the list was correct. He alleged that there was a lot of misinformation on social media. I asked if the company had contacted some clients the week before. He said that they didn’t as far as he knew. He then said that maintaining an orderly market was very much in their mind when deciding how to handle the situation. Perhaps letting clients who held in size reposition before the news was unknown? It might make sense. Still, we’ll see what happens from Friday when they start forceably closing positions. Suddenly, the flow test news takes on a slightly more important dimension. 24/2/2021 07:59 | Possibly... can't rule anything out in this crooked game | onedayrodders
24/2/2021 07:40 | IG index were contacting some people last week apparently, so that would account for the bizarre weakness.Having said that, we are still in the uptrend in the chart, but now right in support level. This to me is a good buy price, so I topped up yesterday at 152p. | che7win
23/2/2021 23:05 | Rodders was that slippage because “A few” knew in advance of the many? | davidblack
23/2/2021 20:05 | Cheers eb. Spreadex have tried to score points as well, but stopped short of saying they had taken IG clients. I’ve tried the platforms of CMC and City Index and both feel a bit clunky, with the latter freezing on my iPad. Neither seem to be offering TXP. Buffy | buffythebuffoon
23/2/2021 20:03 | IG hasn't helped but to be fair share price was drifting down for a while before that | onedayrodders
23/2/2021 19:44 | As much as you can believe yes. Furthermore they were aghast at IG's behaviour and claimed to have hundreds of their clients flocking to them. | evilblues
23/2/2021 19:29 | Thanks DB, my psychic powers have diminished with age. Buffy | buffythebuffoon
23/2/2021 19:17 | Hi evil blues, have they declared they have no margining issue with their prime broker? Buffy | buffythebuffoon
23/2/2021 19:02 | P.S. I was selling a property and putting it in IG or Spreadex but I am now undecided. Buffy | buffythebuffoon
23/2/2021 18:59 | You haven’t suddenly collapsed DB have you? Only half a sentence arrived! Buffy | buffythebuffoon
23/2/2021 18:02 | DB, I wonder if any shorted them after they were told but before many of us were! Buffy | buffythebuffoon
23/2/2021 15:45 | On that IG trend I reckon the regulator is keen to end stock loans on anything below the FTSE350 which obviously doesn’t affect the institutional players. GameStop made stock loans look grubby. Wonder if any institutional players shorted TXP and others ahead of IG announcing the margin changes. | davidblack |
