Tortilla Mexican turnaround plan working says management

Published: 08:20 25 Sep 2024 BST

Tortilla Mexican Grill PLC (AIM:MEX) said it was seeing ‘positive momentum’ after overhauling its strategy even though revenues fell in the first six months of 2024 and it posted another loss albeit reduced.

Since the half year, the Tex-Mex chain said like-for-like (LFL) sales had improved from minus 6% year-on-year (in March) to growth of 4% in September.

Andy Naylor, chief executive, said: “The UK business had lost momentum at the start of the year, and we had to make some big decisions to overhaul the trend.”

This has involved an overhaul of the food offering, more store openings especially with franchisees and overseas with total outlets now 89, changes to its delivery partners and more investment in technology.

Revenues in the six months to the end of June dropped to £31.5 million (H1 2023: £32.7m) with interim losses of £0.2 million (£0.6 million).

Most of the sales dip was due to a delivery revenue decline of 10.3% LFL due to the changes, though delivery profitability rose by £0.5 million.

Tortilla added that trading is on track to meet forecasts this week while a central kitchen is due to open in France in the fourth quarter when the first three sites (in Strasbourg) should also be up and running.

Yeah, you can up those numbers massively and it would still be earnings enhancing for them

MEX only have 38.5m shares, if GYG bid 2x last years sales that would equate to £130m / £3.37. Feels like a stretch but then again this IPO'd at £1.81 and hasn't done much wrong

Very interesting. They have a broad AsiaPacofoc presence and a small US business with nothing in Europe. Have these guys made any serious acquisitions to date or is it all organic growth? MEX could be a very good target for them at an earnings enhancing price even at 100-150p

Interesting RNS & general setup here.

An Australian peer IPO'd last week;

FY23 revenues were around 5x MEX, with EBITDA around 4x

At the A$22 IPO price GYG was valued at A$2.2b / £1.15b. It then popped another 30% and currently trades at $29, so now sports a £1.5b valuation, or 4x FY23 sales (or 100x EBITDA...)

GYG looks substantially overvalued, however it also makes MEX look incredibly cheap. On similar metrics, MEX would have a market cap of £320m (4x sales). It IPO'd at a £70m cap on around 1.5x FY21 revenue. Today it's at 0.25x. I won't bother with EBITDA comps as they are silly.

Todays RNS suggests MEX are going to turn up the heat on growth, from the current valuation it could get tasty ;)

Very good results.Over the pond, Chipotle has amassed a market cap of over $ 80 billion with a growth rate exceeding expectations, all of this in a very little amount of time.MEX has a guiding light

Posted on the LSE forum, massive respect to jon1234Luke Johnson just bought 1.4m shares (3.6% of the company). He took control of Pizza Express in the 90's and grew the share price 20x before selling the business. He's been involved with The Ivy, Strada, Giraffe, Gail's and more. The guy has a proven track record of successfully buying and selling restaurant businesses for decades. With the recent CEO departure, there has to be takeover noises in the city. By far the largest mexican casual dining chain in the UK and valued at sub $20m. Peanuts compared to Chipotle Mexican Grill stock in the US at $70bn valuation.

Dr. I took my daughter into Birmingham around October to look at the retailers and to try MEX in Grand Central. It's a prime location but no better than McDonalds visually. I thought the prices were high for Birmingham but I am a bit of a tight git.
The menu was as expected and the portions decent. To big for a light lunch so we ended up eating at Comptoir Libanais (Lebanese) which was opposite and also a listed restaurant (Comptoir Group PLC).
I have been watching MEX for a year as others on ADVFN thought the branches in the SE were always busy. Restaurants are having a tough time with higher costs. At some point the tide will turn and big brands will be looking for new formulas like MEX and COM to fill the empty high street locations.

Tortilla Mexican Grill plc issued a trading update for the HY ended 2nd July this morning. Group revenue increased by 22.0% to £32.7m (H1 2022: £26.9m) while Group LFL revenue increased by 8.4%. In total, there were 85 sites at the end of the Period operating under the Tortilla and Chilango brands compared to 82 at end FY22 so expansion continues at a steady pace. The balance sheet has strengthened with net debt down to £1.6m. The Board remains confident in the Group's ability to deliver FY 2023 results in line with market expectations, for FY23 revenue £69.8m and adjusted EBITDA £5.0m, both will be new records. Valuation messages are mixed with forward PE ratio at 26.1x bottom quartile for the Hotels & Entertainment Services sector, PEG ratio at 0.3x is top quartile for the sector. Share price is down around 75% since IPO in 2021 but remains in a correction for now and therefore lacks positive momentum. There is long run growth potential here but MEX remains a share to monitor for the time being...
