Mainstream Media exposure & Awareness building up Momentum!

The Guardian

"Some will really come out swinging with this, and critical mass could lead to genuine behaviour change," she says. "Google's not coming out and saying it, but they've invested hundreds of millions, as has Amazon."

David Green, head of global digital marketing at KPMG, which applied for the .kpmg suffix, has also been forthright about the implications of this new wave of gTLDs. He likens the changes to previous industrial revolutions, making the point that top-level domains are not just web addresses, but "massively scalable" databases, which could be used for industrial-scale applications.

xxx - as I understand it there are 'registries' and 'registrars' - 'registries' own the rights to the suffix, but 'registrars' sell them on their behalf and look after the day-to-day administration processes. So if I want to buy a MyPenthousePad.london for example, I go to a 'registrar' such as Godaddy and buy it from them, but Godaddy gets the right to sell the name from the .london 'registry' (which I believe is Minds and Machines - a subsidiary of TLDH). So, only Minds and Machines (i.e. TLDH) own .london but they reach agreements with 'registrars' who can sell .london names on their behalf. Plus, Minds and Machines is also a 'registrar' in its own right, so can also sell names to the general public.
At least that's how I understand things, but I am willing to be corrected.
There's a video here from M&M -

I have been trying to understand a couple of important aspects, but cant seem to find the info. I hope the knowledgeable can help:Is it the case that all domain registration companies will benefit from the new domain names or are some able to offer these suffixes exclusively ? What are the other key aspects to their story? Thanks in advance.

pre Orders: .BLOG - 97k and .APP - 83k. Both contested. Let's hope TLDH go for them in the Auctions.

Spoke to one of the Senior Directors - this rumour is just a distraction. The plan to act as both was clearly considered and complied with all sections of the ICCAN provisions Please ignore - let's focus on an update next week.

Jean Guillon hits the nail on the head and emphasises why this is a total non issue - just sour grapes from certain competing parties who have been outmanouvered by TLDHs management team.

, I believe being a Registrar "and" a Registry was the problem when vertical integration became a subject (years ago) and it moved to the one exposed in the letter the RrSG group sent to ICANN. Unfortunately, here, I don't see how ICANN could investigate if one was given a better treatment. I read the content of all emails from the RrSG group and...I don't really see where the problem is honestly. Is it really the example of Section 1(a) of Specification 9 the problem ? I don't think so. I think the problem is absolutely not here!

The issue basically involves the short time period between launching the OPEN Platform & 'some' registrars being offered registry/registrar agreements.

That certainly wont be enough to jeapordise the OPEN Platform, moreso as 11 registrars have since signed up to it with more RRA's expected.

A lot of 'positioning' going on in the space with the Minds + Machines management team right on top of their game.

What about this though?

"We are asking ICANN to investigate the "Priority Reservation" program and address whether
it is compliant with the agreement provisions cited above. If the program is determined to be
non-compliant, we ask ICANN to implement remedial actions, which could include:

....

• termination of the "Priority Reservation" program, and refund of any fees collected;"

Surely this means that they are seeking refunds to be issued to all current pre-registrations? As a customer too, I don't want to lose my reservations either.

Exactly, TLDH have cornered the market in the domain names that they own. All other registrars will have to buy from M&M. A lot of these are start up registrars who were hoping to cash in on the cheap.

Chris

No they are not asking for it to be cancelled, merely want some clarification.
If you read the comments, they are flapping............
M+M ahead of the game, and other registrars are miffed.

Just shows how focused this team is.

Competitors are calling for current M&M pre-registrations to be cancelled as they haven't followed procedure!

Surely this can't be possible.

Whats the thoughts on registration rates for .London? I seen the article stating a quarter of all 800k businesses in London may be interested, while i think this is totally unlikely that every fourth business will register a domain I do think lots of businesses and individuals not based in London will still purchase a domain.

it is more likely the share price will be reacting to the .London launch and anticipation of the many auctions that we will be involved in during q1 + q2
whether we are in or out of this particular auction is irrelevant
imo
