We don't know that we only know that he recently has to disclose as he is above 4% he could have had 2.99% ten years ago you can't assume he started all buying on Friday. But I am only being pedantic.

I am certainly not saying the "package holiday days are over"

Jet 2 take over 3m from zero just 10 years ago.

They are growing at 20%/30% so add in another half a million this year.

So why are they doing it better?

Level of service is far better with a vertically integrated model. They control everything.
Resort check in is a growing idea that people love.
22 kilo v 15 kilo at TCG is also a big factor.
Better reps/hotels etc

Anyone remember my story about the food poisoning at a hotel and TCG knew but kept sending punters there.
Costs.........its ofteN more expensive with TCG.

So dont just ignore package holidays.........there are over 6 m taken every year

Nowadays anyone can do a price comparison search for flights and hotels and put their own package together.

There's a major difference between "can" and "will".

Plenty still like the package idea and then there's the safety net of knowing that any issues with cancelled flights or transfers are down to the agent rather than you.

The model made sense 10 or 20 years ago.

Nowadays anyone can do a price comparison search for flights and hotels and put their own package together.

Look on TripAdvisor or Youtube to see what a hotel or resort looks like or to research a country for places to visit.

Too much competition means too small margins and an outdated business model with high street shops with high overheads.

The model is fine IMHO but needs a debt free entity for it to work. Also, a reduction in number of shops and maintain a very strong online presence. There are still plenty of people out there who want package holidays.

The model never worked for me. Massively overpriced. Always sorted out my own flights and accommodation. So much so, that the travel agents high street shops barely register in my consciousness.

I think the airline will be broken up if the banks end up owning it. There are some valuable parts but as a single entity its a mish mash.Uk long haul, Condor's frankfurt slots and bits of the Scandi operation have value. Alot of the short haul stuff is tied to the tour operators success (or lack of) and are worthless as a stand alone.

After the recapitalisation what do people think the airline would be worth? And who would buy it?

Mallorca I hope you opened that short in Sports Direct, the Whitbread one would have done well also but not as well as SD, I’ve never known a company delay results because they have made lots more money than they thought, it’s always, what the fu*k where’s all that gone! Writing was on the wall last week unfortunately
