Tesla TSLA.O aims to start its robotaxi service with a company-owned fleet backed up by human teleoperators for safety, Deutsche Bank said in a note after a meeting with the company's head of investor relations.

Tesla looks like it is going to commence robotaxi services in California and Texas in 2025

Safety tales first place IMO regarding all current Tesla plans

Once Trump has been inaugurated , expect to see the creation of federal regulations which mandate what manufacturers and operators have to obey in order to make and/or operate driverless autonomous vehicles.

Expect to see the word 'safety' used throughout

Also expect to see Elon Musk involved in the creation/writing of such federal regulations

Low latency and connectivity will be key - as will human operators involvement in monitoring and edge case control

Oct 24th 2024

Elon Musk said he'd push to regulate autonomous driving on the federal level 'if there's a department of government efficiency'

Elon Musk, who has been campaigning for Donald Trump, has offered to take on a role in the White House, overseeing government efficiency.

Elon Musk pushed for federal regulation of autonomous vehicles during Tesla's earnings call.

The Tesla CEO has previously said he'd be interested in a cabinet role under a second Trump admin.
Musk said he's interested in leading a potential government efficiency commission.

In Musk's regulations ,

Will LEO satellites get a mention in relation to connectivity ?

Will the regulations stipulate how many communication mediums are required to achieve safe connectivity ?

What latency period in mSec , will be stipulated for human operators involved ?

IMO all of these will be addressed along with many other necessary mandated requirements so as to ease public concerns of driverless AV adoption and their safety.

Tesla has confirmed through a new job listing that it plans to establish a ‘teleoperation’ team to remote control its upcoming Robotaxi fleet and the Optimus Robot.

Something that Tesla really needs in order to deliver a Robotaxi service and something that market leader Waymo has already deployed.

What You’ll Bring

Practical experience using application layer languages like C++ and Python[SC1] [DS2]
Expertise with 3D graphics and[SC3] [DS4] game engines – specifically Unreal

Experience with both Windows and Linux environments[SC5] [DS6] : networking, wireless (WiFi and Bluetooth), filesystems and storage

Familiarity with writing and maintaining custom shaders

Familiarity with build systems like MSVC and bazel

----------------------------------------

Has Guident access to people that has expertise with 3D Graphics, game engines specifically unreal ?

What Guident has recently done makes buywell believe that they know that a Remote Control Operator needs to be able to monitor many AV's /Robots

To do this the way Tesla perceive is going to be IMO as follows:

A single remote operator/controller will be able to monitor circa 100 autonomous vehicles or robots all on one screen, with each in small road-strip for AV's or place-strip for robots

It would in practice be AV or Robot --- the two are so different that on a single screen it would not work.

These 100 AV's /Robots will be viewed by a head-worn 3D viewing device --- ie presented to the operator/controller in an unreal game like way on a section of the road or place where they exist which would allow the operator/controller to expand the AV/Robot selected ( which had initiated a "Help" request yellow or red alarm --and then take necessary action/s to create a safe outcome.

Extended Reality Meets Autonomous Vehicle Monitoring: Guident and XRF Execute Strategic Partnership

August 21, 2024 08:00 ET

Boca Raton, FL, Aug. 21, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Guident Corp. (“Guident”) and XRF (“XRF”) have entered into a strategic partnership to integrate XRF's cutting-edge solution with Guident’s Remote Monitor and Control Center (RMCC) platform. This partnership combines XRF’s advanced extended reality (XR) software with Guident’s RMCC software stack, transforming real-time monitoring into a fully immersive “virtual command center.” This innovative setup enables the visualization of autonomous robots and Autonomous Vehicles (AV) fleet location, health metrics, and other key performance indicators (KPIs) from anywhere.

The virtual command center leverages XR technologies, including Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Mixed Reality (MR). A 3D digital twin model is created for the fixed routes, their environments, and each autonomous vehicle in the fleet, accurately reflecting the operational design domain.

By merging these technologies, the solution provides comprehensive situational awareness, enabling remote, immediate, and effective responses to various scenarios. These immersive tools are ideal for monitoring AV fleets, simulation, testing, and staff training.

In training mode, the platform transforms into an interactive learning environment, offering simulations to practice and refine various scenarios, including emergency response skills. With customizable modules, this solution ensures effective and targeted training.

The companies plan to launch the integrated XRF immersive extended reality solution with Guident’s RMCC software to customers in North America in the second half of 2024.

“Our partnership with Guident allows us to introduce an innovative solution for real-time managing of autonomous robots and AV fleets. By integrating XRF software with Guident’s RMCC, fleet operators can monitor and respond to situations more effectively. The interactive training mode offers an exciting way to develop skills and prepare for multiple scenarios. We’re eager to bring this combined solution to market,” said XRF's CEO Gustavo Medina.

“The partnership between Guident and XRF represents a significant step forward in developing safe, smart, and sustainable transportation solutions for communities. We are excited to launch the XRF solution coupled with Guident’s RMCC software, which extends the monitoring of autonomous robots and vehicles worldwide through extended reality technologies,” said Fabio Tylim, VP of Business Development at Guident Corp.

PS

This is what Waymo do regarding remote Teleoperation of their Autonomous Vehicles as of May 2024

It would appear that the remote human DOES NOT ACTUALLY TAKE CONTROL of the autonomous vehicle and DRIVE IT REMOTELY

But Guident technology can and does

Will that be significant in the coming US Federal regulatory changes regarding Safety and the remote monitoring and control of Autonomous Vehicles ?

Elon Musk will IMO decide

-- Will Germany Regulations regarding safety and Autonomous Vehicle Operations Affect the rest of the EU ? --

Ask Google AI this question

Will Europe follow Germany regarding regulations regarding safety and Autonomous Vehicles ?

And the answer is :

AI Overview

Yes, Europe is largely following Germany's approach regarding regulations for autonomous vehicles, with the EU aligning its regulatory framework to closely resemble Germany's, particularly in terms of permitting Level 3 autonomous vehicles with a safety driver and working towards enabling Level 4 autonomy in the near future; essentially, the EU is adopting similar safety standards as Germany for autonomous driving technology.

-------------------------------

And Germany in the Autonomous Vehicle Act has mandated " technical supervision "

Ask Google AI the question

What is meant by the phrase " technical supervision" in the Autonomous Vehicle Act of Germany ?

And the answer is :

AI Overview

In the German Autonomous Vehicle Act, "technical supervision" refers to a human operator who remotely monitors an autonomous vehicle and can intervene in critical situations, essentially acting as a backup driver to take control if necessary, allowing the vehicle to operate within designated areas without a physically present driver at the wheel; this person is responsible for overseeing the technical aspects of the autonomous driving system and can step in when needed.

--------------------------

buywell adds:

If US companies hope to sell the autonomous vehicles that they manufacture into the EU , then it follows that those vehicles will have to comply with EU Safety Regulations regarding the safe operation of Autonomous Vehicles.

Hence

IMO

Elon Musk has already been talking with Alexander Dobrindt and those people working in the Committee on Transport and Digital Infrastructure in the German Bundestag regarding what would satisfy Germany in order to allow Autonomous Tesla Semi Trucks to roll down the autobahns late in 2025 and more of in 2026.

We are IMO at the Autonomous Vehicle X-roads now

In order to make a safe turn and navigate a safe way forwards --- Harmonization is they key

No doubt German Autonomous Vehicle manufacturers are also keen on exporting to the US , so this safe way forwards is a two way street.

Guident is looking superb interesting. I was just reading about the momentum in this sector - eye watering sums (c. $5 billion) of new money raised in just a few deals this quarter alone . Being based in UK I had missed the news flow.Everyone knows automated vehicles is white hot, however what I hadn't appreciated is the lack of monitoring systems available. Guide t looks to be best in class. Given people will not trust automated vehicles with their most precious cargo (family), it goes without saying that remote monitoring and control functionality just had to be mandated. We're positioned perfectly. Fingers crossed all.

AI Overview

In Germany's Autonomous Driving Act, 'technical supervision' is the role of a person who can remotely control an autonomous vehicle, including deactivating it and performing driving maneuvers.

The technical supervisor is responsible for the safety of the vehicle and its passengers.

Here are some of the responsibilities of a technical supervisor:

Investigate and evaluate risks

If the vehicle enters a "minimal-risk state", the technical supervisor must investigate the cause and assess the risk. The vehicle will then present the technical supervisor with options to resolve the issue.

Take control of the vehicle

If an immediate repair isn't possible, the technical supervisor takes control of the vehicle.

React to signals

The technical supervisor doesn't permanently monitor the vehicle, but they must react to signals.

Store and share data

The technical supervisor must store and share data on malfunctions, interventions, and other events.

The law has strict qualification standards for technical supervisors.

The technical supervisor can also appoint other people to help them perform their duties, but they must meet certain training and licensing requirements.
Germany's Autonomous Driving Act has served as a model for other countries, including Japan and France
