People who bought at 46 a month ago must be pulling their hair oout at this price. Not far off 50% loss, does this really warrant it?

that is old socialist thinking.
even if there is a need for low cost housing, what has it got to do with the government.

if you want one, save up a deposit and get a small mortgage.
if you cant, tough. go without.

the nanny state is dead. it has run out of cash.

I hope you are correct smurfy, as I agree on the need for low cost housing. It was only a rumour, but as you know many of these "flag flying rumours" are a precursor to policy.

I don't think the ConLibs will cut housing, low cost housing is badly needed.

It would be a valid reason for the sector to fall on that news if the sector had risen when it was first proposed. It didn't.

We are in the grips of the shorters who have got this on the run.Hedge funds etc have a vested interest in seeing companies collapse these days and it is a mockery of the market.

It is not volume pushing the price down. It's MM's and SETS monopoly that dictate the share price

Ivor you are correct the New Labour figure was £7.5B between now and end of 2011 to be set aside for low cost housing. From their manifesto:

"We are investing £7.5 billion over two years to 2011 to build new houses, delivering 110,000 additional energy-efficient, affordable homes to rent or buy. We believe local authorities should be able to play their part in providing social housing in the future; and we will reform the council house financing system to enable local authorities to maintain properties at the Decent Home standard and to build up to 10,000 council houses a year by the end of the next Parliament."

£7.5B will be a significant loss to the housebuilders. Lack of new build will start a house inflation bubble.

Next support 20p ??? !!! Yikes. Sell and buy when lower is the logic if it can't hold, what's the argument for holding, other than buying again if it starts rising? Being shorted maybe, if so 20 or thereabouts is quite feasible. Any large projects been shelved yet?? Decisions decisions.....

I believe the CONDEMnation party have announced that monies set aside for low cost housing by New Labour is likely to be one of their cuts. I think it was some £150M.
