Symphony Environmental Technologies Plc (AIM: SYM), a global specialist in technologies that "make plastic smarter" is pleased to report that the Cotripal Agropecuária Cooperativa ("Cotripal") chain of supermarkets in Brazil, has announced the launch of their new d2w (biodegradable) and d2p (antimicrobial) carrier bags. Symphony are Cotripal's technology partner and Symphony's exclusive distributor RES Brasil are the masterbatch supplier. The bags are made by Plastifilme, who have been using d2w successfully since 2004.

Testing of d2p samples by UNICAMP University in Brazil according to ISO 21702 found a virus reduction of 99.9% in only one hour, which is vital during the coronavirus pandemic. d2p has also been proved effective against bacteria and fungi, which is important as many carrier bags are never disinfected and are left in the car where microbes can multiply quickly. As the antimicrobial properties are embedded in the plastic, they will never wear off - unlike spraying, wiping, or coating.

Germano Döwich, President of Cotripal said: "Over the years we have aimed to reduce our packaging, to recycle where possible, and also to resolve the issue of plastic that escapes into the open environment by using the globally renowned British d2w biodegradable technology. Today we go further, by helping to protect our customers from Coronavirus and other forms of contamination by using d2p technology, that has been proven against viruses, bacteria, and fungi.

"Cotripal was the first supermarket in the State of Rio Grande do Sul to use d2w to protect the environment. Now we are the first in Brazil to adopt d2p as well for our carrier bags, to protect the health of our customers against microbes in these pandemic times."

I’m afraid until they sign a considerable deal with meaningful upfront or mass worldwide market sales it will continue to drift.
I’m inclined to believe the odds of that happening are stacked in favour but they do have a history of not delivering

Their anti-mould and prolonged shelf-life spiking of waxed bread wrapper would have been a hard sell in normal times. That market has historically been cursed by razor sharp pricing for decades.

Viral protection in transparent film and/or plastic containers of liquid products, if that's what they have achieved, is something else: a blockbuster of interest to every shopper strongly effective in supermarket buying decisions, whose 'time is come'. Buyers are currently scared stiff of picking up a pack previously handled by a COVID carrier. That's a more powerful USP for bread wrapper too.
At the start of lock-down some people were even washing each pack on return to home, but have probably tired of that by now.

Have they succeeded with plastics in that sense then?

Hi scruts, ... er which packaging product? If you mean bread, they talked quite a lot about it including graphs. For instance they said you can increase the bread shelf life by 71% relative to bread with the same amount of preservative but not the Sym's additive, they also said they had been working on just this one product for 10 years, and getting the trials completed was outside their control, but they were very optimistic as to the final success. (within months).

They also talked about their competitors, and mentioned specifically that none of them had the ability to do both anti-microbial and degradable. They mentioned that they are currently selling D2w into 200,000 tons of film.

There will be a recording of the presentation available at some point - I will be alerted to it, at which point I'll post it here (or someone else will). There was a lot of information given related to markets and products and potential. Obviously they are currently dealing with a lot of Covid related work, suggesting a four or five fold earnings uplift but not over any specific period (obviously). My guess would be years rather than months - but we shall see.

Well .... an interesting presentation this morning, and the potential looks exciting. They certainly seem to have a lot of interest in their technology at the moment.

I had absolutely no idea they had such a wide range of technologies (products).

There were no caveats suggesting anything other than a bright near term (under a year) future.

I think you need a job in sym marketing department as your spot on. Should be a fantastic seller in today's climate of plastic waste and covid.

I keep thinking about all the COVID plays out on the market atm. If this tech really does what it says, and is biodegradable... Conceptually it's up there with the best plays. Wish all my packaging was biodegradable and efficiently and effectively killed pathogens along the way. No questions asked.

The problem is they appear to have much needed products re plastics and Covid. However PIs ,including me years ago, get sucked in by the hype. The share price rises and falls back when sales plateau and remain static. The gamble is this another false dawn? I think the share price will rise for the reasons I just mentioned, but again will it last?

Interesting product from Symphony Environmental

Symphony announced on 23 July that Eurofins Laboratories had tested Symphony's d2p masterbatch incorporated in a polyolefin film, against the bovine form of Coronavirus in accordance with International Standard, ISO 21702-2019, and found a virus reduction of 99.84% in 24 hours.

In February, the US Food & Drug Administration ("FDA") approved one of Symphony's d2p technologies for use in bread packaging. Since the FDA approval, the Group has continued to work on evaluation trials with customers as well as independently, the results of which are expected over the coming six months.
