Ever since Apple decided to call its new television product iTV - ala iPod and iPad - there has been talk that ITV, the UK broadcaster, would object to the name.

However ITV has played this down, saying it has no problem with whatever brand name Apple chooses.

But the other suggestion doing the rounds was that Apple was interested in a takeover of ITV, and although that seems too convenient a tale - given the iTV and ITV situation - the story refuses to die away. And so ITV shares closed up 1.5p at 79.55p, well shy of a supposed 140p a share predatory offer. It should be mentioned however that ITV was the subject of several takeover stories last year, mainly from private equity, and it would appear no approach was ever made.

Heavy buying again in STV all in one go - obviously computerised trading - someone is very keen to get them.

5 trading days to go.

Either way, a great and material move Northwards ahead of results. Hopefully this will bode well for a final re-rating beyond recent highs....

I think we may get a holdings RNS later.

My two theories:

1. Institution to institution trades which are off market?
2. MM's selling accumulated stock to institutions which they had on their books?

Edit: I give up on the trades, second 250k trade showing - I would think it's theory 1 above.

phil,
snap! I don't know who that is, but they were willing to buy a relatively high volume for this stock at well above ask - it's probably taken a few days to gather that amount of stock together.

ITV's share price means they have a strong currency for takeovers, but they are also nearly debt free too.
They could take over STVG in cash or shares.
The quicker STVG recovers, the safer for us!

If I were in ITV's shoes, I would be buying STVG out soon before it shows strong business results - in the next year or so.
ITV is doing well, expanding production and producing quality programmes like Downton Abbey, it makes sense for them to take STVG and UTV out - the last two independent UK franchises. It was three independent franchises last year, so they've already taken out one independent.

On a business level, both takeovers would be earnings enhancing to them - even taking over STVG at 200p which is what I personally think it would take.

They need to concentrate on competing with SKY rather than competing with say STVG on play on demand. The technology changes which are happening such as programmes on demand and internet tv is the next challenge.
Makes sense for me that they tie up lose ends here and take us out - they can't do it by accumulating in the market, too illuiqid and most shares tightly held.

ITV moving up strong today too, just to catch up with ITV we should be 50% up from the bottom but STVG's moves are exaggerated so we swing lower and higher.

STVG reports first with UTV/ITV usually reporting in March.

Momentum building, think we'll see 110p very quickly here. Looks like it's going to rip.

Two weeks to results:

STV Group plc will publish its preliminary results for the period ending 31 December 2011 on Thursday, 23 February 2012.

A flurry of buys today, surely the bid price has to rise soon.

Just noticed in the broker forecasts:

Numis is forecasting a 4p dividend this year, 6p next year and 8p the year after.
That is strange to me - a bit high whilst STV has to pay ITV ~£600,000 per month and debt is high. Then again, Rob forecast debt would fall quickly which I think will be the priority.

I want to hear more about their diversification away from tv, I hope they have more information in the results.

Results 24th I think.

It will be interesting to see how they're doing; one negative could be the pension as the year end is end of December - at the low point in the stock market. It should have recovered strongly since then.

Stark contrast here with ITV which is at new highs.

STV has had the licence for decades, it's was debated whether there would even have to be renewal again, I think I posted an article at the time.

Really hard to say how it affects all companies involved - it would affect ITV one way or another as they have to sell programmes to STV at reasonable cost.

STVG is in full dialog with the politicians at Westminster and Holyrood.

Could this hold back ITVs ambitions? There has to be a fear (I'm sounding like Zimbabwe here) that were ITV to acquire and assumingly integrate, that there would be a desire, implicit or not, for a Scottish owned co. to get the channel 3 licence come next renewal.
