Good article, suppose it depends on a few fires from kettles in less regulated countries so they have a change of policy which would help out STIX

Debt in theory should come down as they use/sell the additional stock that they held to try and overcome their supply chain issues. Of course what management say and what actually happens is open to question. But I’m not so worried about the covenants but I would say the dividend is at risk

Going by their short term forecasts, Srix don't seem to think so.

'The growth in kettle controls is over'.........does that mean that there are NO new markets for kettle controls for Strix to enter? or to expand their current base from?

Really?

Deep dive by Maynard Paton

Not very encouraging, highlights some interesting accounting tactics around exceptional items and depreciation. I read stuff like this and realise that my pre-purchase homework is very skimpy compared to some. If I did this amount of background research I might never buy anything (and that might be a good thing).

The growth in kettle controls is over, do new areas like Billi provide a substitute?

BBC are reporting significant changes to China's covid approach. That should help Strix if lockdowns have stifled production of components and finished goods.

In 2018 Strix had 150 patents according to their web site. Patents last for 20 years. I would be surprised if a 20 year old patent had not been subject to improvement in design since it was originally granted. To be honest, I've not heard about an expiry but it gets mentioned here. Given the sheer number of patents how likely is it that one expiry would be more likely to cause a significant downturn in revenue than the well publicised problems caused by the zero covid policy?

Why is Strix going to have 'modest growth'?
And as far as I and others are aware it has good patent protection on its products.....I suspect you are scaremongering!

Well, I've added again. Now a full holding at 2.8% position size. Let's see who's right!

The kettle control market has been predicted to increase by 7.5% CAGR from 2021 to 2026 with an additional 113 million units sold but even the bluffers at Equity Development are predicting very modest growth going forward for KETL and no return in sight to 2020/2021 figures. And that is despite widespread price increases so the unit decline must be significant. Is this the reality of the patent loss situation? Until this question is answered I don't know how you could invest in this.

2020: £80 million
2021 £85 million
2022: £70 million
2023: £71 million
2024: £74 million.

The BBC are reporting a significant change in China's zero covid approach which may lead IMO to an easing of the issues that STRIX recently had to admit. If this does lead to an increase in manufacturing of kettles in China, perhaps Strix will be a beneficiary.

The share price of Strix has fallen to a point where it does seem cheap, but I am going to wait until the final results to see what they say.

some thoughts on the PW posted on YouTube here:

summary

- chinese disruption is a reasonable excuse (many other companies saying same thing)
- unclear when Strix's most valuable patents expire
- the low rate of tax can be explained
- current year's profitability is still good
- expansion plans perhaps overly aggressive

Don't forget most of the fall was caused by China lockdowns. News out that this is being relaxed, should see £1 again next week imo

Cheers Brucie5 - I hope that the dividend here can still be maintained but, if not, then hopefully it would not be cut by more than 25%.

John Lee (Lord Lee of Trafford) has been an active private investor for fifty years and earned a high reputation. His FT column today has;

... over the past six months I have bought large-caps Aviva, Legal & General, Phoenix, and Smith & Nephew, and added to small-caps Anpario, Christies, Concurrent, Manolete and Vianet, plus a small initial purchase of global kettle control manufacturer Strix, taking advantage of lower prices.
