Why the rusting wreck of a second world war ship is so important to China
Story by Rebecca Ratcliffe, south-east Asia correspondent • 7h

One can understand why the Philippines are talking about spending $1 billion on a coastguard surveillance system, over 10 years. They have seen the UKEF support being given to Indonesia and they may be considering such support for their own system. This might be spend $1.2 billion but have a full system up and running in perhaps 3 years.
Imagine Mr T signing a contract for $1.2 billion.
If the Philippines (and the US) want such a system, who could provide it?

Louise is currently described as Sales Director and also as Marketing Manager. It would be a shame if she is on the move. I think she has done a great deal to promote EmTrak.

One of the weaknesses with srt's offering has always been that it can only inform, not enforce, so it's very dependent on the customer's ability to defend its coastline. If the Americans are going to help with this, all power to their arm. 3 Fast Response Cutters isn't much, but it's a start, and hopefully a sign of future intention.

Morning SN-I’ve been reading a lot about the current troubles and it does feel like Custers last stand on a number of fronts.Middle East, Taiwan,Ukraine, migration, weak U.S. leadership. It should be fertile ground for tech that protects borders, surveillance.

pf - the Israel/Palestine situation has existed in one form or the other since 1948 without redrawing the map in any meaningful way. The current conflagration is very unlikely to change that - it certainly won't reduce the world's need for food (and in particular protein) although it might well reduce availability. If so, that will put even more pressure on politicians to protect local resources.

And don't forget the impact on migration - that's a problem that's only going to get worse...

pinkfoot2. "It’s not a great time to be short of cash" Not just for companies, also for investors. Inflation still high - Taxes up -All personal tax allowances frozen = CGT limits reduced - market falling.

So possibly some of the sales are a result of people trying to rebuild their cash piles having splurged the savings built up during the Covid lockdowns.

Problem is CM that the Arab countries seem to be identifying with the Palestinians and the West with Israel-maybe we are looking too hard when the reality is the AIM market isn’t too clever at the moment.

As for fishing, I think most eyes are on more important issues just now-just can’t see it being a priority when the world map is potentially being redrawn.

It’s not a great time to be short of cash so some calming words from the company will help

In these unfortunate circumstances, exposure to the ME could be looked on as a good thing - it's not as though their potential customers have suddenly run out of either need or money to quench it.

The same is true of the South China sea of course. With every new scare about global warming, the importance of fishing as a food source (and income source for those countries that export fish) only increases. I read recently that those nations that are likely to disappear under the ocean are pressing to retain their 200 mile exclusive fishing zones even when they no longer have a physical presence.

This is an environment in which I remain convinced srt can and will prosper.

Might be some short term pain though :¬(

It’s not great out there anywhere but we do have some exposure to the Middle East and US which can’t be great-small caps getting battered everywhere though, particularly those with thin balance sheets

fair enough pinkfoot2. I tend to agree, although the systems business could perhaps be left to ST and the rest to the already excellent tech and sales team.

The biggest weakness(and strength) is ST himself-without him, it’s difficult to see how SRT could survive. There is no natural successor to his hard graft and enthusiasm.

I don’t believe it’s disinformation-I would call it unrealistic optimism which is fine when things are going well-not helpful when they aren’t

More trouble in South China Sea

"The Filipino vessel was on its way Sunday to a Philippine outpost in the Second Thomas Shoal, where tensions have escalated in recent weeks.
Manila said Beijing's "dangerous blocking manoeuvres" endangered the safety of the Filipino crew.
However, China said the Philippines "deliberately stirred up trouble".
Chinese and Philippine ships have routinely played cat-and-mouse around the shoal as a handful of Filipino troops on the outpost, a marooned and crumbling navy ship, require monthly rations.
But Filipino authorities say China has grown more aggressive since Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr took office in June 2022 and sought closer military ties with Washington, Beijing's chief rival for influence in the resource-rich and strategic sea."
