And another one

WARREN WANTS HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE FIGHT
Iain Axon 15 Nov 2005
Frank Warren says he is "90%" confident of delivering a world heavyweight title fight to the UK in the first half of 2006.

Warren's comment came at a press conference held today to announce Matt Skelton's British heavyweight title defence against John McDermott.

It is Skelton who at the moment appears favourite to land a crack at one of the four major champions, although Danny Williams could find himself in the picture if he beats Audley Harrison.

And, with heavyweight boxing being heavyweight boxing, John McDermott must also be in the mix should he cause a massive shock and beat Skelton on December 10 at the ExCel Centre.

With the retirement of Vital Klitschko, Don King now controls all four portions of the heavweight title and is planning a unification tournament between Hasim Rahman (WBC), Chris Byrd (IBF), Lamon Brewster (WBO) and John Ruiz (WBA).

But Warren is confident of gatecrashing the party.

"I'm 90% confident I can get a world title fight over here next year for one of my fighters," he said.

"There's been talk of a tournament but I don't know if it will happen. What I don't know either is which one of the four champions will be in the opposite corner if we get the fight on."

Skelton is relishing the chance of gate-crashing the world scene, especially given the fact that Klitschko is now out of the picture.

"It's wide open at the moment," he said. "Obviously these guys who are world champions are good and although people say its wide open it depends what you are comparing it to.

"In a way it is always open. There's always the possibility an unknown fighter will come through. I'm a great believer in myself and I've a lot of faith and trust in the team around me."

To get that world title fight Skelton will have to deal with McDermott, who has been a professional two years longer than the champion despite conceding more than a decade to him in age.

In the past McDermott's waistline has been as big an issue as his ability, but today he looked trim and in shape.

"I'm the kind of guy who has got a middrift and can't get rid of it whatever I do," said McDermott, who whatever the critics say, can box.

"This is a big chance for me, my dream really," said McDermott. "It's something I've always dreamed of doing and I'm going to go out and give it my best shot. There's no reason why I can't win this fight."

CALZAGHE-LACY IS ON!

----------------------
-------------------
-----------------------
Iain Axon 14 Nov 2005
Promoter Frank Warren is delighted to announce that WBO World Super-Middleweight Champion Joe Calzaghe will face IBF holder Jeff Lacy in a sensational unification showdown set for early 2006.

Warren was in New York last week locked in negotiations with Lacy's promoter Gary Shaw and US TV Network Showtime and has confirmed that the super-fight is signed and will take place in Cardiff in February or March.

"This is the fight that Joe, the media and the fans wanted and I am absolutely delighted that following some hard work over the last few days the fight is on," Said Warren who will promote the show in association with Shaw.

"It will be the biggest fight of the year in Britain and certainly one of the most highly anticipated fights on the world scene in recent years and it will take place in the UK,"

"Joe is recognised as the best in the division that he has ruled for the last eight years with a record 17 defences seeing off six former world champions,"

"Lacy has looked impressive to date and the media are describing as the new kid on the block and the heir apparent,"

"They are the top two in the division and in the prime of their careers and what's for sure is that there can only be on winner who can truly claim that he is the best."

Shaw said, "Jeff is going over to Britain to prove to everyone that he is the greatest fighter at 168 pounds,"

"This is the fight that the fans, myself and Jeff have been waiting for and will finally see who is the king of the division."

Calzaghe, who recently out-pointed Evans Ashira in Cardiff despite breaking his hand in the early stages of the fight, said, "This is the fight that I have been shouting out for over the last few years and I am delighted that Frank has secured it,"

"It has been my dream to unify titles since I won the WBO crown against Chris Eubank over eight years ago and this fight against Lacy is the one that will secure my legacy,"

"I was disappointed more than anyone when the fight against Lacy - which was scheduled for earlier this month - had to be postponed because I broke my hand against Ashira but that is in the past and I'm now fully focused on fighting and beating Lacy,"

"I saw Lacy's last fight against Scott Pemberton and it was impressive but against me he is going to be in the ring with the hardest hitting super-middleweight out there and he will know it,"

"I look at Lacy as a guy on the way up in his career not a guy on the way out so I know that he is going to be hungry to take my title but that's not going to happen."

Lacy, who has defended his IBF crown four times, said, "I am a man of few words but I am excited about finally meeting Joe in the ring and I look forward to finally unifying the title and proving that I am the best in the division,"

"Here's to a great event and a third belt around my waist."

No Return: Why Naseem Hamed Isn't Coming Back

Painful as it may be, ability don't last – Pulp Fiction

10.11.05 - By Cris Neill: It's official: Prince Naseem is making a comeback. OK, he said he might be making a comeback. Perhaps. Amid all the excitement about his mooted return to the ring, let's remind ourselves that as usual, Hamed's assurances that he will box again are wilfully vague. There are assurances of a six-fight contract with an unnamed American TV network, nothing more substantial. I'm an admirer of Hamed, and I'd like nothing better than to see him stage a sensational comeback, but I'm going to stick my neck out here: it's ain't gonna happen. Not now, not ever. He will never be world champion again. Who knows why he makes repeated claims that he will fight again? Perhaps the rise of Amir Khan has goaded Hamed's sense of what-might-have-been.

Like Tyson, Hamed was able to trade on his aura of invincibility while his boxing began to look increasingly one-dimensional. By the time he fought Barrera, Hamed was virtually unrecognisable as the fighter who dismantled Steve Robinson. Many boxing pundits would argue that the Barrera fight was an answer to the questions that had dogged Hamed throughout his career, but the truth is more complex. Hamed's application to his craft had gradually waning long before the Barrera fight. His power, startling for such a small man, had made him complacent, and he neglected his brilliant and unorthodox boxing skills. The Robinson fight – Hamed's first outing as a featherweight – was a masterclass in skilled aggression. The 21-year-old pretender to the throne received less than a dozen meaningful punches during the fight, and outmuscled the older, more experienced Robinson. During the course of the bout, Hamed demonstrated that he could box orthodox, southpaw, square-on; just about anything a boxer was capable of.

Fast-forward to the Barrera fight and a very different Hamed emerges. It was apparent after the first three minutes that Hamed had nothing new to bring to the table, just a dogged insistence in trying to land bombs. He looked off-balance and was frustrated by Barrera's watertight defence and skilful counter-punching. The ring is merciless in its exposure of a fighter's shortcomings, and Hamed paid the price for believing his own hype. That Hamed, to put politely, had lost touch with reality was confirmed in a documentary released after the bout – The Little Prince – The Big Fight. It makes for uncomfortable viewing; Hamed agonising over his haircut just days before the fight, pettishly wrangling over his gloves and looking awkward and amateurish in sparring. The behaviour of his entourage wasn't exactly endearing either, as elder brother Riath sanctimoniously condemned Las Vegas as a den of iniquity, a place of fornication and gambling, but was more than happy to take the money of the punters who queued up to watch the fight. Of course, documentary-makers are biased, just like anyone else, but it was apparent that Hamed's heart wasn't in the fight. It went beyond the softness and luxury he had surrounded himself with – you just sensed that he had lost the hunger. There's not much reason to assume that he had rekindled this desire in exile from the ring - £30 million in the bank, his estimated career earnings, must deaden the impulse to put his life and reputation on the line.

Let's assume that Hamed does make a come-back. He will face the arduous task of getting his body and mind back into a state of ring-fitness, which at the age of 31, after a three-year absence, will be a daunting task. Time isn't kind to boxers who trade off their reflexes, as Roy Jones has discovered. Once Hamed has made inroads into regaining his fitness, there's the question of who will he fight? It seems likely that his camp will have worked out a strategy whereby he takes a few warm-up fights, before having a shot at a world title. There are parallels here with the return of Iron Mike, where the glamour of his name was enough to fill seats, but the quality of opponents was sadly lacking. Tyson at least had the advantage of returning to an impoverished heavyweight decision – Hamed will not face such an easy ride. His punching power will remain, and can be worked back to what it was, but his timing and coordination will never be what they were, and he would surely fare badly in a rematch with Barrera or a bout with Pacquiao.

Probably Hamed's greatest chance of at least partially recovering what he once was would be a reunion with Brendan Ingle; a scenario about as likely as Hamed becoming undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. There have been criticisms of Ingle's methods, but it can't be denied that he made the best use of Hamed's physical attributes and skills. He succeeded where other notable trainers have failed. For example, at least part of the blame for Hamed's lacklustre display in the Paul Ingle fight can be levelled at Oscar Suarez. Hamed looked drained against a fighter he should have mastered with ease, due to Suarez's harsh physical training regime. This was inappropriate for Hamed, who for years had dodged regular training runs. Equally, Manny Steward, although a great trainer, failed to appreciate many of the qualities that made Hamed such a great proposition as a fighter, such as his unorthodox balance and timing. But all of this is academic, because Hamed won't be coming back. Rumours of his impending return will doubtless crop up over the next few years, like recurring bouts of malaria, but the Prince will never become King.

Update on Procedures Issued

Frank Warren and Sports Network Limited have today concluded that its interim

Showtime are struggling and are desperate for a big fight, they may pay it. Gate money in the usa is higher than the uk so it will pay

Lacey has said he wont come, but he needs to fight Calzaghe, if the money is not in the usa he may have no choice.

1/ Old news
2/ Naz was not agood boxer, he had good tactics and amzing reflexes, which need constant working on. I dont think he will last long, his boxing is not orthodox. He may not get booed at by the stadium, like he did at his last match of his career, but he will have to prove himself.
3/ lets wait and see
