OK Jeff, thanks. Just visited the UU. website and it appears it is close of business on 20 august which is described as the "Record Date for the Rights Issue" so you need to be holding shares at that time to qualify I think.

Edit: Of course, the current share price may fall to nearer 490p once the new issued shares become fully paid up so that profit may not actually be realised - but that is some time away!

Jeff, sorry I don't follow that logic. If you buy UU. now at say 545p, you are still entitled to the rights shares I think until sometime in august. So surely it would have been better to buy say earlier today? Unless that is you had to be holding the shares Friday night.

if you bought uu at an average of 570 pre monday,which was easy to have done and you take up the offer of new shares your sitting on a profit of 57p a share now.

Utils very exciting, but negative. If the money is moving, to where? Techs? Cannot believe it, too early.

HJ: You mentioned crossover SSE as -ve, would you say the same about UU? Graph is similar.

Just making sure I understand (it took me 2 years to understand what Indieman and the Doc were talking about on Taxi thread)!

Note for the thread: Sri I'm late, shifts etc... part time day-trader, but graphs in heading brilliant, also the views. I think if you really wanted to retrace (nice term), you would find that ranges both quoted and predicted are some 80% correct.

FYI I am researching BG/Shell, as the old, old rumour, is about to resurface.
Well thats according to a friend (senior manager in BP). First time he has mentioned it in several years. I thought he may be worried about being made redundant, but then realised that he is 66 aleady! Still giving it stick out Saudi!

Fair comment. Anyway enough of all this. Looking at SVT 664.5 now and getting itchy to go long but obviously utilities a bit out of favour today so will probably miss the bounce but am going to watch for a bit more, 660 and I'm in.

For those with patience kel came home today - personally only made a couple of points as went in too large too early but pleased nonetheless.

Still think it's a sell but staying out now until Thurs after all the news is over and done with

Hmmmm, got requoted up on 660 SVT long which usually means it's going down so looks like into the 650s now, not confident about longing this at all.

Good afternoon peeps, thought this was the day thread for a moment :)
I also bought UU. last week, selling some Barc/Atk to fund the purchase, figuring it was time to go defensive - oops !
I'm only trading UU. within an ISA for the longterm, so for myself today's news is no great disaster, perhaps even good news.
I will be taking the up the RI, imo there's plenty of scope to turn a profit, over the medium term this could prove to be a fruitful investment, just what I'm looking for to some extent, as with all investments you pays yer munnies...

nice to see a bit of argy bargy - was short KEL at 444 and 440 got out this am at 436, thought it would be nice to see a 430 trade but , if people think utils look cheap at these levels then Kel could easily be back 440+, ill be there to short it again. Now back to NRK.........

Unlike yourself, I do not claim to understand the fickleness of all the utilities. I trade them on a case by case basis between support and resistance which is more or less outlined in the header. you will have seen the trades I made because I posted them. I am sure there are some unhappy people on this thread who followed your reccommendation to buy UU at 584 plus because they are bound to go to 600 soon enough. You have made some very good calls and some very bad calls, luckily for me I have ignored your bad ones. It is good that you have the confidence to make the calls in the first place, for which I commend you. Meanwhile I shall continue to post my actual trades, but to be quite honest it feels like gambling at the moment because patterns are being broken and these shares are not necessarily the safe bet that they appear from the header.

the state of flux that uu has thrown into the markets today says stay out till it settles down.thats the wise move,not my strong point tho.
