12/11/2003 09:20 | LONDON (AFX) - Shares in AWG were sharply lower in early deals on news UK water industry regulator Ofwat has provisionally rejected a bid by AWG's Anglian Water Services for a price increase from April 2004, dealers said. The news follows the regulator's decision last week to allow Northumbrian Water and United Utilities Water to hike their water bills from next year. At 8.28 am, AWG was trading 20 pence or 3.70 pct lower at 520. AWG now down 7.7% - still short kel - managed to get some more yesterday at 449.5 | captain cash

11/11/2003 10:45 | LONDON (AFX) - The European utilities sector was downgraded by HSBC to 'underweight' from 'neutral' on expectations for a continued strong performance on equity markets, dealers said. HSBC's strategy team is increasingly bullish on the European stock indices, and it therefore recommended investors to increase their positions in "higher beta sectors", such as telecoms and cyclicals, which it raised to 'overweight'. "We expect the utilities sector to underperform over the next quarter ... and ... expect a general shift away from the more defensive stocks," said the broker. Kelda PLC, Scottish & Southern Energy PLC and Iberdrola SA are the most defensive stocks in the utilities sector, and the most likely to underperform the rising market, said the broker. A trader CC commentated - it is pleasing to see a broker do a proper job for a change. CC is short kel and sse. | captain cash
