12/5/2003 11:52 | techno1 Justice was done on two fronts as Saints finished with a flourish to clinch eighth place - and make City pay for their shabby ticket allocation. Wrecking their party at the last ever game at Maine Road was probably the best way to get back at them for the underhand treatment of the Saints fans. Not only did City unilaterally slash the ticket allocation from 3,000 to just 1,300 but those travelling fans who did get in were shunted into the corner section where they were soaked by the intermittent downpours. Saints threatened to take legal action to recover any reduction in prize money if they lost this game - but at least that messy scenario is no longer an option thanks to this victory. They could have dropped as low as 13th but with Michael Svensson's goal giving them a 1-0 win and other results going their way, they finished eighth - a difference in prize money of £2.5m. Equally important is the morale boost from their highest finish since 1990 when they were seventh under Chris Nicholl. In terms of perception, when the league table is reviewed at the start of next season the club will now be seen as a solid top-half team instead of being on the fringe of the relegation battle. And there is a sense of natural justice about this placing. although they have tailed off in recent weeks, Saints probably deserve to finish eighth or thereabouts. Of course they can look back at points needlessly dropped and wonder if they could have been further up the table. They have been as high as fifth but in truth they do not quite have the quality, the killer instinct or strength in depth to sustain that - especially with a Cup run in tandem. But this result means they can look back on a campaign of progress yet again. They have more points and a better placing than last season - and they have finished above Tottenham. How ironic that Glenn Hoddle left for a bigger club who would be challenging for silverware and Europe. Now he is facing calls for him to go! Tottenham's capitulation at home to Blackburn allowed Saints to leapfrog them with a win which sets them up nicely for the FA Cup final. How sweet the irony! LOL! | gaudz

10/4/2003 15:37 | pause for thought... ? Watford Manager Ray Lewington threw down the gauntlet ahead of Sunday's semi-final as he insisted: "We're going there to win we're not there to make up the numbers." The Hornet's supremo has seen his side carve out two wins from the past two games, and hit the back of the net eight times in the process to prepare for the FA Cup clash and said that it was do or die time now. He commented: "I think we have to go there and try to win and I fully expect every player to come off absolutely exhausted and either elated or absolutely gutted. There's no in between." While Saints team will virtually pick itself for the FA cup clash, Lewington continued by saying he still had some thinking to do before he settled on his final eleven. christ i'm sh*tting it ! | gaudz

16/2/2003 10:12 | Saints cured a seven-year itch by winning through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup for the first time since 1996. But they were made to sweat by a plucky if limited Norwich side who were undone by two goals in three minutes. It was not hard to spot the turning point which came on 68 minutes as Paul McVeigh curled a delightful shot round Antti Niemi from the left edge of the area - and against the far post. Saints went straight up field and took the lead as Chris Marsden hung up a good cross, Brett Ormerod climbed well to nod down and Anders Svensson buried a shot from six yards. It clearly knocked Norwich who went further behind almost immediately - and again Marsden was involved. He broke through the inside left channel to hit a powerful drive which was too hot for Robert Green to hold and Jo Tessem whipped in the loose ball from close range, just seconds after coming off the bench. | gaudz
