Katy,

A)UEFA Cup.

B)Yes if you lose in the Champions League 1st group stage, or the qualifying
round, you enter the EUFA Cup.

Bad day for our South Coast clubs today!

Which Euro competition does the FA cup winner enter?
And if you get knocked out of the Champion's league
do you automatically, fall back in to the UEFA cup?

TIA

Just a gut feeling mad4it re Spurs though they are not in my main 4 to contest 3rd spot. Someone usualy makes a late charge, could be Spurs, Blackburn or Leeds.I plumped for Spurs. Dont think Everton will be involved and cant see any other side being capable. I agree with your opinion on Heskey. Never rated the guy. As for Beattie...the guys on fire and anyone in that sort form should be condidered. G. Le Saux should also be considered for a return to an England jersey. Todays Saints v Pool game is mammoth for both clubs. Pool need a win desperately to get back on track and Saints will be fired up with a European spot begging. What a bonus that would be.

If Sven picks Heskey for England and leaves Beattie out, it's time he went back to Sweden.

....but the pool will win today! I reckon it's probably time for a scouse backlash!

Spurs are sh*te and have the worst defence out of the top 16 prem clubs!

United winning means that the championship, in my opinion, now becomes a 2-horse race. Chelsea, Newcastle, Southampton and Liverpool will slug it out for 3rd spot, with possibly Spurs entering into the race.

Chelsea have a busy day today then, because they are currenly drawing 1-1 at Old Trafford, with Man Utd!

Hope they've hired The Concorde!

Naturally, as a long time supporter, I hope the Saints give Liverpool's bottom a good smack today. But also note the game at St.James Park (Magpies v Chelsea). Seems like any result at all there, will be good new for the Saints. Look out Europe, here we come (it is OK to dream, right?).

don't upset him !!

There is going to be an almighty sulk over Southampton today from whichever manager loses the televised clash between Saints and Liverpool (5.35 kick-off).
That's the view of Coventry boss Gary McAllister who knows both well. He has played for Strachan at Highfield Road and for Houllier at Anfield and he knows how much both hate to be beaten.
But he knows the Merseysiders will have their work cut out to end their run of 11 Barclaycard Premiership games without a win against the in-form side of the division.

He told the Liverpool Echo: "I think Liverpool will have to play very well because Southampton are the form side and in James Beattie they have someone who is on top of his game.
"They will be fired up and they will be fighting like Trojans to get a result.
"If there is any similarity between Gordon Strachan and Gerard Houllier it is that they don't suffer fools and they both hate losing.
"They want professionalism from their players and staff and will accept nothing less. Whenever Gordon or Gerard lose I know it hurts them badly
"There is a saying in football about born winners. I have never understood that because no-one can win all the time but you can certainly hate the idea of getting beaten.
"I am obviously very close to the Southampton manager but having spent time at Liverpool I hope they get the result they are looking for."

Liverpool have midfielder Salif Diao suspended and Dietmar Hamann is still out with a shin injury.
Houllier changes his side almost every week in a bid to end the club's winless run but the signs are he is likely to go with Heskey and Owen up front.
El Hadji Diouff has only scored three goals for Liverpool and they have all been against Saints. He will either play wide left with Vladimir Smicer on the right or he will switch to the right with John Arne Riise on the left.
For Saints, Jason Dodd is back in full training after recovering from a torn calf but tomorrow's game is likely to be too soon for him.
Marian Pahars has had the stitches removed following his ankle operation but he is still four weeks away from resuming full training.
Agustin Delgado is back in the reckoning after a back problem but Federico Arias is unlikely to be thrown in just yet. however he could play for the Reserves against Spurs at the Friends Provident St Mary's Stadium on Tuesday, kick-off 7pm admission free.

Saints: (from) Niemi, Telfer, Lundekvam, M Svensson, Bridge, Fernandes, Oakley, Delap, Marsden, Beattie, Tessem, Ormerod, Davies, Williams, A Svensson, Delgado, Dodd, Jones.
Liverpool: (probable) Kirkland, Carragher, Hyypia, Henchoz, Traore, Smicer, Gerrard, Murphy, Diouff, Owen, Heskey. Subs: Riise, Mellor, Baros, Cheyrou, Dudek.

Abix LOL! a lot of people are predicting a win for liverpool but with sven their tomorrow beattie will be donig his upmost to impress. Are you going down for the game tomorrow?

from football365
England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson will be there to see Southampton's scoring sensation James Beattie and young Liverpool keeper Chris Kirkland before naming his squad for the international with Australia at Upton Park next month. He will also want to take a long look at Liverpool's England candidates Michael Owen, Emile Heskey, Steven Gerrard, Danny Murphy and Jamie Carragher to see whether they are as bad as the critics have painted them.

But Southampton have their own ambitions and chairman Rupert Lowe believes his election to the FA's executive board can only help Southampton in their quest to claim a European place next season.

Lowe, who replaced Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale earlier this week, said: ``It has historically been the bigger clubs that have tended to be represented in the past.

``I will be doing my best to represent the league and Southampton as we look to see what we can do to change things.''

Champions league place beckons!!

The ice-man cometh!
Ice-cool defender Michael Svensson is aiming to freeze out Middlesbrough tomorrow as Saints bid to break into the Champions League qualifying frame.
Victory at the Riverside could lift them level on points with third-placed Chelsea who have a vastly superior goal difference.
A more realistic target would be to overhaul Newcastle in fourth spot. The Geordies are just one goal better off and would be pegged back if they become the first side to lose in the league at West Ham while Saints become the first team to beat Boro on their own patch.
The pitch is protected by a plastic covering filled with hot air so the game should not be in doubt despite the recent cold snap.
Temperatures are set to rise slightly but in any case Svensson is well used to it.

He laughed: "We got a couple of days off at the start of the week so I went home to Sweden. It was minus 20 degrees and there was 30 centimetres of snow.
"And that is in the south of the country near Gothenburg. It is worse further north!
"Everyone here is feeling the cold but I am used to it. This is quite mild for me!
"It was nice to get home to see my family because they did not manage to come over for Christmas as we had four games in 10 days.
"That was the most I have ever played in such a short time but it did not bother me. It was easier of course because we were playing well and winning and I felt fit and strong.
"It was just a case of preparing myself properly before and between games but I think we all needed a short break this week.
"Now we have to pick up where we left off and make sure we do it again and play with the same intensity as we did against Spurs."

Saints are unbeaten in nine, a run which has seen them surge up to sixth - their highest ever Barclaycard Premiership placing. And it won Gordon Strachan the Barclaycard Manager of the Month award for December.
With things going so well there is almost a danger of the team being expected to win at Middlesbrough who are the only other side still unbeaten at home apart from Saints themselves.

Svensson added: "We have to guard against complacency. That is always that danger but we have to be aware of that and work hard on what we are good at.
"It is hard not to get carried away with how well we have done but we have to make sure we are up for it and be ready mentally.
"It would be nice to get into the top four but Middlesbrough are a tough side with a very strong defence. Although they have struggled for goals lately they have some quality strikers.
"They are very difficult to play against especially on their own ground but it would be nice if we could win there so we were the only team still undefeated at home."

Don't worry about Liverpool. We've got a better player than yours and he's only 19.

rat attack - i dont think pompey will win div 1 they are slipping back now leicester will win the division. Pompey are a team of old men (has beens)they look tired and we will see more injuries creeping in - utd showed what sort of class they really are imo. Its all very well redknapp borrowoing all these players but what happens when they have to return to their teams? Mandrick has also said once pompey get into the premier league he will probably sell the club whqat then?

mrk - i think houlier will be out soon unless he turns things around and my money would be on martin oneil at top of the hit list as a replacement. You are right strachen is very passionate about his football UP THE SAINTS!!

mrk marsden is getting on a bit now (34) but imo is still an excellent player - i find his work rate is excellent although he did have a shocking game on news years day i think against tottenham where his passing was awful. Anyway i think long term the new signing arias will replace marsden?
Re Beattie leeds are in a lot of debt as are chelsea i relly cant see either of them splashing much cash around. Houlier has spent a fortune at liverpool and i cant see them giving him any more cash they want results now anyway how many forwards do they need? they will also want to offer a new manager £££££££££ for new signings should houlier go.
Blackburn - they seem to have got the cole / yorke partnership working imo they will stick with it. tottenham - would hoddle dare make a move for another saints player? i doubt it plus i think they are also broke??
One team u didnt mention - man utd? they are my biggest worry they want to sign another forward they were interested in west hams dicanio so why not beattie? or is he not a big enough name?

Abix i missed the goal the other night is this new kid a forward or midfielder?

I support Liverpool. Strachan's a top young manager. I admire his enthusiasm and he's done great at Southampton. Champions League is extremely optomistic but UEFA cup I think is a certainty.

I'm just praying that Liverpool get their act together soon, it's distressing!
