09/1/2003 20:53 | Upthesaints, I posted a little earlier in the campaign that the Saints would not finish in the top ten. I still do not believe that they have the squad to maintain their current league form or position but, wow, are they doing well or wot!! And, wot about the share price! Good luck I say. Nice to see the smaller town clubs getting involved in the race for European places with the 'big boys'. | bobalex2000
09/1/2003 20:47 | we are red we are white we are fkg dynamite!!! Well done Gordon !! Top award for Strachan Gordon Strachan has been rewarded for his side's fine run with the Barclaycard Manager of the Month award. The Saints boss scooped the December trophy - his second inside a year - as his team won three and drew three of their six matches. They kicked off with a 1-0 victory at West Ham and followed that by beating Birmingham 2-0. They drew the next three at home to Newcastle and away to Leeds and Chelsea before rounding off the year with a 2-1 success over Sunderland. Saints have kept it going with two quickfire wins over Spurs and are currently sixth in the Barclaycard Premiership, their best ever position since the league's conception in 1992. Their previous best placing before that was seventh in October 1994/95. The decision was made by the Barclaycard Awards Panel, which includes representatives from football's governing bodies, the media and fans. The Barclaycard Awards Panel said: "These truly are great times for the St Mary's faithful, they are sixth in league, their best ever Premiership position. This is largely due the commitment, experience and knowledge of manager Gordon Strachan. His side are currently on a nine-match unbeaten run and with players like James Beattie and Wayne Bridge doing so well, it looks likely to continue." Strachan, who also won the January award, came close to getting it in October. Saints won all four fixtures but was just pipped by Gerard Houllier who also had a 100 per cent record. Strachan said: "It is very nice to get this but genuinely the performance of the players means more to me. "That is not being disrepectful but my enjoyment comes from helping the players and the team to get better and this is an indication that is happening. "We can all give ourselves a pat on the back and say well done to each other because things are going well right now. "I always felt we had it in us to get to this standard but I did not know where that would take us in the league because it depends on others. "We are a small squad which is a benefit in a way because it means we are all very close. I don't have too many options so I don't get confused or change things round too much. "Our system is the same as it was when we were fourth from bottom of the league but the difference is we now have someone scoring goals." Strachan and his team took a little bit of stick after failing to win any of their first four of the season and tomorrow they have a return fixture at Middlesbrough who held them to a goalless draw at the Friends Provident St Mary's Stadium on the opening day of the campaign. There were some who questioned the manager and even wrote off Michael Svensson after half a game at Anfield! But Strachan resisted the temptation to bite back saying: "Let's not go back there. Let's enjoy playing football and getting better. "You could spend the rest of your life going back to negative points and become a real negative person with a chip on your shoulder. "Anything negative in your life should be tossed aside and you should get on and do something about it." FACT FILE Strachan last won the award for performances during January of the 2001/02 season. He had also won the award twice for Coventry, in December of 1996/97 season and in February 1997/98 season Gordon Strachan joined Southampton on Monday 22 October 2001 Strachan had been out of management for just six weeks having left Coventry City after five years in charge The Scot's first managerial job came as assistant to Ron Atkinson at Coventry in March 1995 He succeeded Atkinson in November 1996, becoming Coventry's longest serving manager at the club since John Sillett Strachan was a key player in Aberdeen's success under Alex Ferguson in the 1980's winning Scottish Premier League titles in 1980 and 1984, Scottish Cup medals in 1982, 1983 and 1984 and a European Cup Winners Cup medal in 1983 when the Dons beat Real Madrid Strachan joined Manchester United in 1984 where he won an FA Cup Winners medal and played again under Ferguson before moving to Leeds United. He captained Leeds to the Division Two title in 1990 and two years later, at the age of 35, led them to the Division One Championship in its last year before the inception of the Premiership | upthesaints

02/11/2002 14:31 | gaudz i agree i was gutted when Gordo was appointed but he is proving us all wrong. He is so passionate about the game - hes great. Re staying around i hope so to and now with unrest in the FA sven may go next leaving the door open for our Gordon. Mad4IT - dont forget we have englands no3 in the squad - i think we will do ok in europe. | upthesaints
02/11/2002 14:29 | As a POMPEY fan I wouldn't invest in these even if I had a cast iron guarantee that they would quadruple. Incidentally, if a share buy back cant halt the slide in the share price, what can? All I can say is enjoy the Premier heights whilst you can, the real team will be back next season and they can at least legitimately claim to have experienced success at the top!! | rat attack
