For the three months ended 31 December, South32 reported quarter on quarter production growth across most commodities.

Among the highlights were a 17% increase in metallurgical coal production to 1,483kt, a 13% increase in nickel production to 10.8kt, and a 17% lift in zinc production to 16.4kt.

And while South32’s copper production fell 1% quarter on quarter, this couldn’t stop the miner from recording a first half copper equivalent production increase of 12%. This reflects recent investments in copper and capacity.

Aluminium production increased by 15% during the first half, with a 50% uplift in low-carbon aluminium, following the acquisition of an additional shareholding in Mozal Aluminium and restart of the Brazil Aluminium smelter.

the OZ chart shows it os in a very tentative short term uptrend I el T and of course OZ is lead market and where most of the trading volume is . S32 here just follows aussie move but at times tries to anticipate next move in OZ but quite often the punters get it wrong . On most days it gives a day trading opportunity and brokerage of £3 and NO stamp duty helps . SD is not paid on any stock on aussie market and it is a big drawback on UK market as applies to most stocks - NOT GLEN OR S32 !

I wish I knew why South32 is not on its highs of 290 / 300. I read somewhere months ago that one broker said it would be one of the highest dividend payers for 2022/2023 and yet Barclays continue to downgrade / underperform with a target of only 170 ! I feel that at 227p it is undervalued by 50% unless I am missing something. Is there a particular risk (perhaps China meltdown - but surely not now they have eased covid restrictions)?

S32 does it's own thing LG but , having no stamp duty to pay in UK, there is a trading opp most days with commission of only £3 :)

Anything new to explain today’s price drop? Broker downgrade perhaps. Not that I can see anything obvious.

S32 really took off in oz today and glad I was able to grab 5000 in opening auction today in Uk . hoping it will run up to 245 but struggling at 240 bid at present and needs patience . Mining stocks have retreated after a bright start which might have slowed S32 advance !

South32 Limited Quarterly Report June 2022

outh32 Chief Executive Officer, Graham Kerr: "Our teams delivered another strong operating performance in the June quarter, despite challenges that included extreme weather, supply chain disruptions and reduced labour availability caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Record annual production at Worsley Alumina, along with record quarterly production at South Africa Manganese and a strong sales result in June, capturing the benefit of high prices, capped another year of substantial progress for South32.

"We achieved further significant milestones as we reshape our portfolio towards the metals critical for a low carbon future. In May, we completed the acquisition of an additional shareholding in the hydro-powered Mozal Aluminium smelter. We also completed our acquisition of an additional interest in the MRN bauxite mine and delivered first production from the restart of our Brazil Aluminium smelter, powered by 100 per cent cost efficient renewable power.

"Our strong financial position and capital management framework, which is designed to reward our shareholders as our financial performance improves, supported further returns across the year via our on-market share buy-back, bringing total returns under our capital management program to US$1.9 billion since its inception."

Another ASX resources share that Morgans is positive on is South32. It is a fan of the way the mining giant has transformed its operations to green metals. As well as boosting its ESG credentials, the broker feels it has improved the quality of the company’s earnings.

Morgans has an add rating and $6.10 price target (EDIT: £3.50) on South32’s shares. It is also expecting big fully franked dividends per share of 26 cents in FY 2022 and 36 cents in FY 2023. With the South32 share price currently fetching $4.71, this will mean yields of 5.5% and 7.6%, respectively.

The broker said:

S32 has transformed its portfolio divesting South African thermal coal and acquiring an interest in Chile copper, substantially boosting group earnings quality, as well as S32’s risk and ESG profile. Unlike its peers amongst ASX-listed large-cap miners, S32 is not exposed to iron ore. Instead offering a highly diversified portfolio of base metals and metallurgical coal (with most of these metals enjoying solid price strength). We see attractive long-term value potential in S32 from de-risking of its growth portfolio, the potential for further portfolio changes, and an earnings-linked dividend policy.

but hit hard in last few days and likely to slip more tonight in OZ after US indices tanked again. $4.60 is chart support level in OZ and might get close to that before rebounding hopefully .

Thanks for posting this, scotches.
I posted earlier (April 1st) that I couldn't resist selling my position in S32 when the share price climbed to just over £3.
I tend to sell out too soon and would not be at all surprised if this turned out to again be the case here. However, I made over 130% on the deal, and nothing wrong with that.
The clinching factor in the 'sell' decision was S37's low yield. Interesting to see this is looked at in your posted item.
