30/6/2024 12:42 | French Vote: Euro To Gain Vs Pound, Dollar If RN And NPF Do Worse-than-Expected By Tim Clayton Published: Jun 30, 2024 at 10:00 Updated: Jun 30, 2024 at 10:30 EUR French Election French Vote: Euro to Gain vs Pound, Dollar if RN and NPF do Worse-than-Expected The Pound to Dollar exchange rate (GBP/USD) has held just above 6-week lows, but unable to make headway and trading around 1.2635 with the dollar holding firm. The Pound to Euro (GBP/EUR) exchange rate was little changed around 1.1815. There was choppy month-end trading on Friday and there is scope for a sharp move on Monday after the French election while the US Presidential TV debate also sparked further significant speculation. As well as political stresses, markets were also continuing to monitor economic developments. UK GDP growth for the first quarter of 2024 was revised slightly higher to 0.7% from the previous reading of 0.6% and compared with a 0.3% decline the previous quarter. ING commented; “Encouragingly Nevertheless, it added; “Somewhat amazingly, UK rates are still priced very similarly to the US. We have a much greater conviction that UK rates will come lower and that sterling will be dragged lower too.” Markets were continuing to monitor the French parliamentary election with the first round on Sunday. Opinion polls suggest that President Macron’s party is running in third place with National Rally (RN) first and left-wing alliance (NPF) second. foreign exchange rates ING noted; “if a candidate does not secure 50% of the vote in the first round, only the top two candidates go forward to the second-round vote on 7 July. Given the polls point toward Marine Le Pen's faction at 35% of the vote, the Leftist coalition at 28% of the vote, and the centre at 20%, President Macron's party looks set for a wipeout in parliament.” It added; “The question for the market is whether a Le Pen government looks at the French bond market and starts dropping some of its plans for seemingly unfunded tax cuts - or pushes ahead. Our eurozone team suspects it will be too early for a new government to substantially water down its pre-election pledges and that it may well be a rocky few months.” MUFG added; “For next week, the larger the number of consistencies that has resulted in the failure of centrists candidates making the final ballot, the greater the negative reaction might be.” It added; “Obviously if RN and NPF were to do worse than expected at the expense of Macron’s Ensemble or Les Republicans, we will likely see some spread narrowing on Monday and some modest EUR gains. As far as US interest rates are concerned, there has been no significant shift in Federal Reserve rhetoric. According to Atlanta Fed President Bostic, a rate cut is likely in the fourth quarter of 2024 with four further cuts in 2025. Governor Bowman stated that a rate cut will eventually be on the table if inflation moves towards 2% and policy is currently restrictive, but she added that it’s too early for a rate cut. The latest US PCE prices data will be watched closely on Friday. Consensus forecasts are for headline prices to be unchanged on the month with a year-on-year increase of 2.6% from 2.7% previously. Core prices are expected to increase 0.1% on the month with the annual increase also at 2.6% from 2.8%. Following the US Presidential debate, Predictit’s live betting odds suggested Trump had a 58% chance to win in November from around 53% before the debate. The consensus is that a Trump victory would tend to support the dollar initially due to expectations of increased trade tariffs. MUFG commented; “the dollar has recovered after a moderate sell-off in response to the data and drop in yields with the US presidential debate providing some additional support after a poor performance by President Biden has increased the probability further of a Trump victory in November.” Commonwealth Bank of Australia strategist Carol Kong commented; “Markets likely extrapolated today’s debate outcome to the actual election outcome in November. Trump’s policies are likely to add to inflationary pressures and escalate trade tensions, thereby supporting US interest rates and the safe haven US dollar.” Tim Clayton Contributing Analyst | ![]() waldron | |
