Swiss Franc Outperformance Linked to Remarks from SNB's Jordan, Says HSBC

(MT Newswires) -- The Swiss Franc rose strongly against all major currencies Thursday even as risky assets recovered from prior losses in North American trade, with HSBC attributing the outperformance to comments from Swiss National Bank Chairman Thomas Jordan.

"In particular, Governor Jordan highlighted that a weaker CHF is now the most likely source of higher Swiss inflation, and that the SNB could counter this by selling FX. He also added that there were reasons to believe that the neutral rate 'has increased somewhat, or might rise over the coming years,'" HSBC strategists said in a note to clients on Thursday.

The remarks were made at the 2024 Bank of Korea International Conference during the Asian trading session on Thursday, and HSBC strategists say they are consistent with their bullish outlook for the franc, which fell more than 8% against the dollar year-to-date to become the second worst performing G10 currency.

"We admit that the CHF remains vulnerable in the near term, especially if a more carry-positive environment resumes. However, over the medium term, we maintain our view that the depreciation pressures on the CHF should wane in potency, and even more so if the SNB's FX stance begins to shift," the strategists said.

The central bank surprised the market by cutting its interest rate to 1.5% in March, and data published since then suggested the SNB stopped selling foreign currencies and began selling the franc instead during Q1. The FX policy shift was consistent with March's forecast for inflation to fall back later this year and remain subdued near 1% over subsequent years.

The Swiss central bank actively trades the franc as part of its inflation-targeting monetary policy framework, and it's likely that when it began selling the currency earlier this year it did so in order to prevent inflation from falling to too low a level. Jordan's remarks also made clear on Thursday that its FX policy would only shift again if "upward risk to inflation were to materialize."
