The euro could extend its gains if eurozone inflation data on Wednesday exceed expectations, Commerzbank said.

The market might bet on the European Central Bank being more "hawkish" in signalling policy tightening at Thursday's meeting if the January inflation data beat forecasts, said Commerzbank currency analyst You-Na Park-Heger. "That means EUR might find further support in the run-up to the meeting on Thursday."

The ECB assumes price pressures will be temporary but the higher inflation is now, the more concerned policymakers will be about it.

Sterling probably won't appreciate much further versus the euro as the bar is high for markets to raise U.K. interest rate rise expectations, said Danske Bank analyst Mikael Olai Milhoj.

Unless U.K. inflation exceeds expectations over the course of 2022, it will be difficult for markets to price in more rate rises than the current five expected for the year, he said. That means sterling will see less support from relative rates going forward.

"If anything, relative rates may become a drag if markets start to price in more aggressive actions from the ECB/less aggressive actions from the Bank of England."

National bank president to keep ‘very close eye’ on inflation


The president of the Swiss National Bank (SNB), Thomas Jordan, says he takes the significant rise in inflation seriously and that one must “keep a very close eye on how it continues”.

Some of this inflation is “certainly temporary” and will decline again, Jordan said in an interview External link with Swiss public radio, SRF, on Monday. But all central banks must also be careful “that it doesn’t become permanent”.

At the same time, he warned against dramatising the situation. In the short term, there are always major movements in the price level, he said. “The National Bank’s job is to ensure price stability in the medium and long term.”

Last year consumer prices in Switzerland increased by 0.6% on averageExternal link, due in particular to higher prices for petroleum products and for housing rentals. In 2020 and 2019 average annual inflation was -0.7% and +0.4% respectively.

Jordan said he still considered it a good sign that the US Federal Reserve would probably raise interest rates soon. “This means the American economy is also back at capacity. It also means interest rates around the world are going up a bit and basically that’s positive news for us.”

Tough as steelStrong commodity price inflation because of rocketing demand could threaten earnings at steelmaker Severfield (LSE: SFR). Forex:

The dollar strengthened 0.4% against the euro and is a hair weaker against the yen. The dollar's recent strength isn't complicated, Scott Petruska, chief currency strategist at Silicon Valley Bank, told WSJ.

"It's a dollar story. It's a rush into safer currencies." He said the dollar is outperforming the Swiss franc and yen due to more attractive interest rates and yields.

"The Fed meeting is coming up and they're ready to cut stimulus more aggressively" than the Swiss, Japanese or other major central banks. The risk-off mood that's helping the dollar is driven by the "spectacular fall and volatility" in the US stock market, especially in tech, and the Russia-Ukraine crisis, Petruska said.

Asian currencies consolidated against the U.S. dollar in the Asian morning session ahead of the FOMC meeting's outcome later in the day.

Sentiment seems to have tilted to the cautious side, with market participants bracing for the FOMC decision, DailyFX.com said.

With inflation running high and commodity prices edging up, markets may be expecting the Fed to tighten policy sooner and quicker, DailyFX.com added.
