I've just commented on the REF board that I can not believe that the Co has not made any announcements re the latest contract awards.

I hope they have got their numbers right.

We are having discussions with our advisers about a capital fund raising and we
are also in constructive talks with other businesses in our sector in order to
achieve faster market penetration, synergies and further opportunities for
rationalisation. I hope that these matters will be concluded shortly and that we
will be able to bring proposals forward for shareholder approval. Clearly,
however, with the size of the balance sheet at present the scope we have is
limited and shareholders should be realistic about the scale of what might be
achieved in the short term.

In the last AGM statement, chairman Tim Wightman said that the company
expects benefits to "begin to show through in the second half."

Not, if you also take the £12m debt into consideration.

Massive dilution or D4E will finish this company off.

Joyce Loebl wins contract Sep 1 2004
By Guy Anderson, The Journal

Joyce Loebl has been awarded a £6m contract by tank maker Alvis Vickers, pushing the electronic specialist's order book to record levels.

The three-year deal - announced yesterday - will see the Gateshead-based company supply more than 500 computerised integrated engine and gearbox systems for the fleet of Newcastle-built Challenger 2 battle tanks.

Work will start on the order later this year, and will help to underpin a core workforce of 12 plus a further 135 jobs at Joyce Loebl until 2007.

The company's order book now stands at a record £24m; up from £15m earlier this year, which was in itself a record.

Geoff Carswell, chief executive of Joyce Loebl, said: "Joyce Loebl is delighted to continue to supply its high-quality, reliable products to Alvis Vickers and the Ministry of Defence."

The contract is the latest in a series of big contract wins for Joyce Loebl.

The company recently won a £1.1m order for 66 control systems for the Titan and Trojan armoured construction vehicles which are currently in production at Alvis Vickers' Scotswood Road factory.

Alvis put the £250m engineering vehicles into full production in June this year, leading to the creation of 100 jobs. The project - which will provide three years of work - has been in development since 2001.

A fleet of 33 Titan bridgelayers plus 33 Trojan obstacle breachers will be delivered to the Royal Engineers in 2006 and 2007.

Joyce Loebl also announced a £2.7m deal for the supply of on-train security systems for Portuguese Railways and a £1.5m contract to equip the RAF's fleet of AWACS early warning aircraft with new computer displays.

Screen - the parent group of Joyce Loebl - recently announced "significant progress" which pushed turnover to £21.3m in 2003; up from £18.7m the previous year.

The gross profit also increased to £8.7m from £8.2m in 2002.

Joyce Loebl has also reduced costs for the Royal Air Force by developing a means to test aircraft, it was announced yesterday.

Previously systems to protect aircraft from enemy attack were tested with the aircraft on the ground; Joyce Loebl has found a way of testing the electronic counter-measure systems without taking planes out of service.

The Mission Data File Validation Facility is based at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire at the Air Warfare Centre.

The mission data file validation system is expected to sell for about £200,000 per installation and Joyce Loebl believes it could sell up to 10 to Nato countries.

Steve Walker was also appointed on 1st July 2004 as Product Manager, with the remit of overseeing the future direction and developmenf of all products, and a bias towards market force requirements. Steve has worked for a number of divisions with Petards, most recently heading ProGenie sales and development.

Les Hipwell is also joining Petards Ltd on 1st September 2004 as Operations Director, and will take responsibility for Software Development, Supply Chain, Field Service Engineering, Customer and Internal Support. I think we can say good bye to the placing being at 4p now.

Anyone institution remotely interested in buying some at the placing must surely have enough clout in the city, and a hefty incentive to pull the price as low as possible in the meantime.

I don't think even this management is incomeptent enough to bust the company, but they may of course be deliberately making thigs look worse either because they want to cash in at the placing, or because thay want to call in administrators and get it all for next to nothing.
