'more acquisitions from Qualcomm'

26 Aug 2021

'We’re also watching Qualcomm’s moves in the Automotive industry, which we expect to be significant in the coming months. Qualcomm’s recent pursuit of Veoneer, a developer of a full stack of automotive technologies including active safety systems (e.g. radar, vision systems, driver monitoring systems, V2X, ADAS ECU, roadscape), autonomous driving features, and restraint controls is a clear indicator of the company’s commitment to expanding its presence in and focus on opportunities in the Automotive industry.

In sum, there are exciting things ahead for the Automotive industry — across many fronts. It’s good to see GM and AT&T partner to bring 5G connectivity to GM vehicles, and I expect to see more partnerships, acquisitions, and beyond from the likes of NVIDIA, Qualcomm, as well as innovation from automotive manufacturers moving forward.'

Colin (Barnden, EETimes) Post (Today 10:42)

This slide presents my latest estimates for #automotive #DMS market shares, with analysis for 2026. I chose to focus on that year because the nominations will mostly have been made by then and the regulatory picture much clearer, leading to stabilizing market shares.

There will be a lot of "nomination noise" in the next 6-24 months, so I devised a series of metrics called "KCIs" (Key Competency Indicators) to maintain focus on the big picture. The share estimates are based on the ten metrics shown in the slide, which I have discussed in more detail in a soon to be published EE Times article.

The KCIs point overwhelmingly to a dominant position for Seeing Machines, potentially with a number 1 factor 3 market share. Smart Eye is a worthy supplier, but in dire need of converting its well-publicized design-wins into vehicles reaching start of production (SoP). Companies survive long term on revenue growth, not PR. Cipia establishes credibility from a relationship with Mobileye to take third place.

My analyst's view is there is a clear lack of understanding of just how demanding "OEM automotive grade" DMS actually is. The test, validation and verification processess for automotive #software are simply brutal.

ISO 26262 is a serious standard and represents a phenomenal barrier to entry both to established eye tracking companies in adjacent markets (such as Tobii) and even to the #tech giants more adept at writing commercial-grade software (such as Apple, Amazon, Google and Microsoft). This is why Mobileye still dominates ADAS forward camera and also why it continues to exist as a standalone business unit within Intel.

In terms of M&A, I expect Cipia and Jungo to have been bought by the end of this year. Whether Seeing Machines continues long-term as an independent company will largely be decided by its leading institutional investors.

Note, I use the term "DMS" for simplicity, which includes driver, occupant and in-cabin (interior sensing) monitoring. The #growth possibility are staggering. In 2026 I estimate an automotive DMS market size in the range of 60-65 million units.

If you are an existing or potential investor in DMS and seek independent analysis of the leading #technology suppliers, current state of the market and future direction, I can be booked for telephone-based consultancy via GLG and Guidepoint. Just ask for me by name.

That's precisely what I believe he's doing but it seems a tad desperate. McGlone references AUS$ billion this year for RFQs and same next year yet SEYE make no reference to RFQ's at all

The Market reaction to Smart Eye claiming to be in pole position says it all!Why does Martin see the need to either berate the competition or exaggerate their progress & his rhetoric on occasions is made without thought or consideration & the concern I would have , were I to be a SEYE investor, is what else does he fabricate within his statements.Perhaps he is putting SEYE in the shop window hoping for a decent exit?

'Key information not disclosed in Smart Eye interim report, published today at

1. Number of automotive tier one partners.
2. Number of new models reaching start of production (SoP) in CY21.
3. Number of vehicles produced with Smart Eye DMS software in CY21 (translates into license fees which drives revenues).

Main customer (BMW) has reported delivery numbers up 44% for 2Q21.

If you are an existing or potential investor in #DMS and seek independent analysis of the leading technology suppliers, current state of the market and future direction, I can be booked for telephone-based consultancy via GLG and Guidepoint. Just ask for me by name.'

'Final Words

'During the company’s 22 years, we have never experienced a period of such intense consolidation as right now. With the present atomized DMS market, we believe the consolidation of market players are inevitable. Smart Eye has taken a decisive and strategic step forward to grasp the future by joining forces with Affectiva. We are now in pole position'

A global microcap with vision

The global auto industry is currently evolving at a rapid pace and during such periods of structural change, equity markets present genuine disruptors and genuine pretenders.

Differentiating between the two is our job as active managers.

Autonomous vehicles are at the forefront of auto innovation, but we don’t think investors need to risk their capital punting on the could be winners in the race to full autonomy.

Instead, the global microcap space (which includes businesses with market caps of up to US$1 billion) provides opportunities to gain exposure to established tech distributors that are driving innovation in the auto sector.
Enabling machines to 'see'

It sounds like the sort of story you’d hear from a tiny speculative tech company, however Seeing Machines Limited (LON: SEE) is the industry leader in vision-based monitoring technology.

Seeing Machines’ driver monitoring technology is currently used extensively in the auto and aviation industries. Our research indicates clients currently using Seeing Machines Technology include General Motors, Daimler, Caterpillar, Emirates, Qantas, Progress Rail, Coach USA and Transport for London.

Vehicle models in which Seeing Machines’ technology can be found in include Mercedes EQ Series (Electric Vehicle), Mercedes S-Class, Ford F150, Cadillacs, Escalades, and Mustang Mach-E.

In Aviation, Qantas 787 training simulators as well the Royal Australian Airforce’s HAWK simulators use the tech.

So, what’s under the bonnet?

Seeing Machines’ Fovio Driver Monitoring Platform employs computer vision algorithms to track movement of a driver’s face and eyes. It’s automatic, unobtrusive, and intelligently aware.

The algorithms can accurately and in real-time, measure a driver’s visual attention to their environment, assess their degree of drowsiness, and ultimately detect if the driver has passed a threshold of risk. The technology precisely analyses head pose, eyelid movements and eye gaze under a full spectrum of lighting conditions, including through sunglasses.

This data is then processed to interpret driver attention, focus, drowsiness, and impairment levels. Risk mitigation is then enacted through intelligent alerting of the driver as well as adjusting a vehicle’s wider control systems.

Conditionally autonomous vehicles and advanced safety functions, such as collision avoidance systems, require a reliable measurement of a driver’s level of “engagement”. But Seeing Machines’ technology is different – it’s designed to allow vehicle systems to hand over control intelligently and safely, or take back control from the driver.

Although the company is continually innovating, Seeing Machines’ technology is underpinned by more than two decades of scientific research into human behaviour in real-time.

Regulatory tailwinds

The global industry standard for vehicle safety – the European New Car Assistance Program (NCAP) has mandated that vehicles must include vision tracking technology – the sort of technology that Seeing Machines is a market leader in – to receive a 5-star NCAP rating.

We think competition in the auto sector will force more and more manufacturers to gain higher safety ratings through implementing the sort of technology platforms offered by Seeing Machines.

Further, driver monitoring system (DMS) applications that combat drunk and distracted driving are being supported by legislators globally.

A white paper on the legislative history of drunk driving, released by the Centre for Alcohol Policy in the United States, outlines support from law enforcement and increased adoption of safety technologies by original equipment manufacturers as key forces to ending drunk driving.
A robust financial outlook

Seeing Machines' financial performance is at an inflection point.

2021 marked the long-anticipated commencement of automotive royalty revenues as over 120,000 new vehicles hit the roads with Seeing Machines’ driver monitoring systems embedded.

These royalty revenues are expected to increase sharply over the next 2-3 years as production of the vehicles carrying Seeing Machine’s DMS technology ramps up. The royalty revenue carries margin of around 90%. Our research indicates the average revenue earned per license is ~A$10. So, with 100m cars produced each year, you can see how this rapidly expands.

The company is well funded with over A$47m net cash and the current trajectory indicates profitability is in sight.

Overall, the growth potential in this space is enormous. There are around 100 million cars manufactured across the world each year and our industry analysis indicates that by 2028, 90% of cars will have tendered for driver monitoring systems.

Finally, M&A activity in the automotive supplier market has been heating up. Qualcomm and Magna are currently in a bidding war for Swedish automotive technology company, Veoneer. Qualcomm’s offer implies a US$4.6 billion valuation.

Seeing Machines could similarly find itself in the cross hairs of a lucrative takeover as tech giants seek to make inroads into the autonomous driving technology space through established businesses with leading proprietary technology.
Gain exposure to global microcaps

Portfolio Manager of the Spheria Global Microcap Fund, Gino Rossi, recently wrote about the benefits of blending global microcaps with large caps in investment portfolios. You can read the Livewire article here.

CAE Australia and Seeing Machines contract:
"CAE Australia has been awarded a contract by CASG to upgrade the RAAF's three Hawk Mk127 full-mission simulators with the innovative Crew Training System developed by Seeing Machines.

CAE Australia and Seeing Machines will collaborate to install and integrate the Crew Training System that features precision eye-tracking technology on the CAE-built Hawk Mk127 full-mission simulators used as part of the RAAF’s lead-in fighter training program.

The eye-tracking technology improves aircrew training by providing objective insights and detailed data on where pilots are looking during training scenarios in the simulator.

CAE Australia, Seeing Machines and the RAAF proved the effectiveness of the eye-tracking capabilities over the past year during a research and development program where the Crew Training System was installed on one of the Hawk Mk127 full-mission simulators for 78 Wing at RAAF Williamtown..."
