Personally I think SMT are flogging a dead horse in Moderna.
Other technologies are rapidly catching and probably will overtake them at a fraction of the cost.

I still have a token holding and never added for reasons like this.
It was even in profit for a while!

Anyway happy to wait until things become clearer before I add.

If indeed I do.
I wish everyone well.

Very true LLL Whatever one does (or does not do) there is about a 50% chance of being wrong and a near 100% certainty that (with a crystal ball) one could have done better, even if one proves to have been broadly right!

1knocker - fair enough.

I suspect there'd have also been opportunities to sell SMT higher before the year's out. Just as there was a brief window to buy in lower at around 735p on Monday.

I sold half my holding this morning. No one ever went bust taking a profit, and there should be an opportunity to get back in cheaper before the year is out.

I also bought Spirent Communications. It is a bet on the takeover going through, but if it does there will be a decent arbitrage profit. I hope that a rocky market will discourage the regulators from interfering. If the takeover does fail, there will be a big price drop, but the company does seem basically sound and in time should recover, so worth the risk - fingers crossed.

As they say in Private Eye, remember shares can plummet as well as go down. Still there's a buying opportunity for those with the cojones.

Moderna downgrades outlook.15% down preopening.SMT must regret buying Moderna. At one point the stock represented its largest holding at aound 10% of the fund. The fact that ,as of end June,it now only accounts for around 6% of the fund is a function of relative underperformance.

Weird comment. If you there is an opportunity to buy something that you believe is worth $100 for just $91 then you should do so. It was an easier decision when the discount was 22% although they were up against some unlisted % limits back then which restricted their flexibility. If you have an investment that you believe will earn 15%pa then you will have no shortage of new investors.

ASML on the cusp of a grand.

Today @ Euro 995.

Consider share price performance - July

2005 Euro 21
2010 Euro 32
2015 Euro 90
2020 Euro 630
2024 Euro 995

if you additionally take in to account various stock splits along the way, the share price performance has been truly staggering

A great share pick by the ScoMo team.

shano2 - think we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

I regard the current share price more as a reflection of the historically higher than normal discount to NAV. Rather than an issue with the NAV alone.

The buyback announcement was intended to boost sentiment, narrow this discount & boost the share price. And it has - to an extent - succeeded in that. You only have to look at the graphs pre- & post- March 24 to see this.

SMT clearly isn't going to put all its money into treasury. But I don't have a problem with the managers buying back a MEASURED amount when they feel the share price is trading at an unwarranted discount to NAV. These situations are fluid and if the share price continues to recover, AFAIK there's nothing to stop SMT reissuing the treasury stock at a higher share price later on. Or indeed cancelling them to reduce the total number of shares in issue.

Similarly, once the £1bn buyback has completed, if it has had the desired effect (higher share price & lower discount to NAV), they can rest the policy. If it hasn't fully met their objectives (but has helped to some extent), they can either do more or look at alternatives.

LLL the waste i was referring was was the money used for buybacks when i feel it should be invested. The share price gain is only a paper gain, it is only the dates of buying and selling that are of any importance.
As i said if buybacks helped the NAV why not put all the money into treasury. The share price would plummet. So with roughly 10% of the capital in treasury it means the remaining 90% has got to work harder as the 10% will not contribute to NAV growth. Look after the NAV and the share price will follow.
What do propose they should do when the 1 billion has been used up?

shano2 - whilst it's hard to unpick cause & effect (as so many things influence SMT's price), fact is before 15th March's buyback RNS, the share price stood at 781p, versus 898p currently.

I wouldn't call that 15% rise a "complete waste".

Moderna secures partial victory in Covid vaccine legal fight

Financial Times, July 2, 2024

The FT reports Moderna has secured a partial victory in its legal battle against Pfizer and BioNTech, with the High Court in London ruling that Pfizer and BioNTech’s Covid-19 vaccine infringed one of Moderna's mRNA patents filed in 2011. However, another Moderna patent related to respiratory virus vaccines was found to be invalid, allowing Pfizer and BioNTech to continue using similar mRNA technology, with both parties considering appeals against aspects of the ruling.
