08/10/2008 09:55 | Tchenguiz stopped out of M&B. From the FT: "Robert Tchenguiz, Mitchells & Butlers' largest shareholder, has sold his 25 per cent stake in the UK pub group in the latest illustration of how the financial crisis in Iceland is having far-reaching repercussions for UK companies. Some 101m shares in the All Bar One operator changed hands after the formal close of business in London at 130p apiece. That compares with a market price of 163p, which had already fallen 12 per cent during the day. ... Shares in M&B are down 74 per cent over the past 12 months. They have fallen 25 per cent in the past week. Following Tuesday night's transaction, Mr Tchenguiz still retains an economic interest of 4.8 per cent in M&B through contracts for differences." It is getting to the stage where good news is just an opportunity to sell, and bad news will trash a share. Nigel martin | gnnmartin

08/10/2008 06:57 | dealy, in general terms I agree with you. Many shares will have been oversold due to panic/fear, distressed sellers, stop losses, momentum and so forth. There will be huge bargains out there as long as you can buy for the medium/long term. However, in relative terms, I think SCi has escaped lightly (so far) from the market turmoil when you compare it to most other stocks in the sector. | darrens
08/10/2008 06:14 | Guy Monson from Sarasin (who manages about $6 billion in equities) just described the problem as follows: equities are the only liquid assets at present (bonds, real estate, private equity, commercial paper all currently totally illiquid) so cash raising occurs via the sale of listed equities. This is occuring irrespective of the value. Strong hands can buy incredible bargains in such an environment. And if all the companies truly are doomed then we are all truly doomed anyway so it doesn't matter. I do not however believe the world as we know it is about to come to a complete stop. | dealy

07/10/2008 13:37 | just dropped in here, crikey the intelligent and informed comment makes a difference from the TAN thread. If this drifts into the low twenties I think I will have a pop. I took some of the placing, then sold out completely a while ago as the general bear market set in, if they can make TRU sell I'm not sure it will drive the price in this environment, but the cash gives them another year to screw it up in I guess. Tchenguiz should by all that's fair be as bankrupt as a squirrel by now, SBRY, MAB, property and so on - how does he hang on? Amazing. TTWo a hound - I'm gone. sold just above $15, took the loss and moved on. Drifterama I think. | queeny2
07/10/2008 13:37 | afternoon all........Iceland probably to be rebranded to ruskiland and a change of flag............the banks are knackered by the looks............ouc The global credit crunch has crippled Iceland's biggest banks, which racked up foreign debts equivalent to as much as 12 times the size of the economy. The nation's current account gap swelled to the equivalent of 34 percent of gross domestic product in the second quarter, mainly because of the cost of debt payments. ``The commercial bank model there has failed,'' said Sunil Kapadia, an economist at UBS Ltd. in London. ``For such a leveraged economy as Iceland, it was clear this was going to happen, but the pace has been surprising.'' | blockbuy
07/10/2008 12:20 | I just read (in the Guardian, I think) that the "main Icelandic banks" were/are funding Tchenguiz. Nice for Tchenguiz if his debt is denominated in Icelandic Krona, but it will also mean that they will be calling in their money at the first possible opportunity (whenever that may be).
