In the CEO's opinion, developing a new business in this region of Portugal (Alto Tâmega, Vila Real district) is consistent with the Government's intention to develop the economy in the most remote areas of the country. "With the population collapsing in rural areas, our mine will be able to reinvigorate the economy and the demographic balance", defended David Archer.

The CEO acknowledges that “no one wants a mine at home”: “There are many people who don't like mines, it is a trend in Europe and the Iberian Peninsula. Of course it will change things, but we think that we can do it in a way that is accepted by the local people. The benefits and opportunities will be great for the local community. We designed the project in order to eliminate impacts or reduce them until they are insignificant. There will be a mine and a lithium production plant, but the local population will not see it because it will be hidden. We are developing a green and smart mining project ”.

So what does green mining entail? Savannah promises to develop new local businesses and create jobs for future land rehabilitation. In addition, it will create a shared benefit plan: money from the mine will be allocated annually to community projects. “We want to give back to those around us, it is mandatory. We are very aware of that. We want to build something that gives value to the community and the environment ”, says David Archer. The study on the economic impacts of the Barroso Mine project, carried out by the University of Minho at the request of the British company, recommends precisely the creation of an annual financial amount (around 500,000 euros per year) to set up a Community Development Fund.

The project foresees the creation of 210 direct jobs and about three times more indirect jobs. Another measure to reduce the carbon footprint of the Barroso Mine is to give preference to electricity from renewable sources (hydro and wind) to power the mine. "It is an energy-intensive activity to extract and grind 1.5 million tons of rock per year," said David Archer. In the pipeline, the company also has the construction of a new solar power plant to supply the mine and provide electricity to the local community, in addition to projects for carbon sequestration and reforestation of burnt areas.

“We have to develop mining operations differently, it cannot be the same as in the past. When you think of mine as that of Panasqueira, people are afraid, but this mine is different. It is not the same form of exploitation ", guarantees the CEO, noting that" the Government supports the development of the mining industry, as long as it is in a responsible and sustainable way ".

David Archer calls for the lithium mine to be viewed in a broader context. “Europe has a real challenge with emissions, if it wants to be carbon neutral by 2050. Especially with regard to transport - about 20% of emissions are from transport and have been increasing, instead of decreasing. The material that we are going to produce in Portugal, ultimately, goes to electric batteries that have the mission of avoiding 100 million tons of CO2 ″, he concluded.

An article from yesterday. It's quite long and in Portuguese.

When it comes to time lines we know Archer is full of BS but he does seem to have a genuine care about the environment.

David Archer, CEO of Savannah Resources, acknowledges that "no one wants a mine at home." But it does guarantee that environmental sustainability now plays a central role in lithium exploration.

The British Savannah Resources believes it will have the green light from the Portuguese Environment Agency to start in 2022 with the first major lithium exploration in Europe. If everything goes as planned, in the space of three years Mina do Barroso, in the municipality of Boticas, could be producing 30 thousand tons of lithium per year, enough to manufacture half a million electric cars.

The project has been subject to disapproval and protests by environmentalists, the autarchy and the local population - which created the United Association in Defense of Covas do Barroso to try to lock up the mine - but the company listed in the AIM segment of the stock exchange London Stock Exchange (London Stock Exchange), which is dedicated to the prospection and development of mining assets, ensures that the entire operation will comply with green and smart mining practices.

“The objective is to make Mina do Barroso“ a sustainable and innovative project in the Portuguese mining sector. It is about using tools to mitigate social, ecological and technical problems by applying holistic concepts and working together with local authorities and populations ”, guarantees David Archer, CEO of Savannah Resources, stressing that“ the current mining works have nothing to do with to do with the way the mining sector worked for 20 or 30 years ”.

What has changed then? The British mining official says that “exploration has become increasingly demanding”, with environmental sustainability taking on a central role in the way the ore is removed from the soil. “With the adoption of green and smart mining measures, Savannah will actively promote the elimination or mitigation of any adverse environmental and social impacts at all stages of the operation, also enabling communities to monitor work in real time”, he promises.

Since 2017 the company has invested 30 million euros in a first phase of purchase, evaluation and prospecting. Now it hopes to move forward, at the end of 2021, with a second phase that will last about nine months and will include the construction of a factory inside the mine itself for the production of a concentrated powder (with a content of 6% of lithium oxide), in which another 110 million euros will be invested.

Before that, there is still a long way to go: until the end of November, the process of answering the doubts raised by the Portuguese Environment Agency to the Environmental Impact Study (EIA) presented by Savannah on May 30 is underway, after which the document will follow for public consultation. After that, it will be up to the APA to issue an Environmental Impact Statement (DIA).

“We are very happy with the Environmental Impact Study (EIA) delivered to APA and with the depth of analysis achieved. I believe in an analysis based on facts and that we will be able to put all the facts on the table so that there is a good understanding of what the mine means and what its impacts are. These impacts can be analyzed from an environmental, social, demographic and economic perspective. We have to look at this as a whole. The economic impacts are going to be very good for the region and the country, ”said David Archer to Capital Verde.

Very quiet on here. Talking of which Seagullsslimjim hasn't posted anywhere since February this year. I hope he is OK.

A little bit of interest is being shown with the trades.

It's about time we heard something from Mutamba. Licences granted and they just raised some money to maintain its ongoing operations in Mozambique, where it is working to progress the 4.4Bt Mutamba mineral sands joint venture project.

And this from January 2020:-

In the short term, our focus will be to continue to progress the Mutamba Pre-Feasibility Study ('PFS') towards completion, which, upon delivery, will trigger the increase in our interest in the Project from 20% to 35%. With an Indicated and Inferred Mineral Resource of 4.4Bt at 3.9% total heavy minerals, the global significance of the opportunity is clear and compelling."

Better get on with it then!

yes looks ready to break out, surely there is some news flow.

Even if it is just hype, the amount of money being thrown at the EV sector is absurd surely it will spill over eventually.

EIT have a conference on Raw Materials today surely a nice time to make an announcement....

Thanks IB. I hadn't realised Lombard had teamed up with Oxford University.

Aren't they new to SAV?

"There are unprecedented investment opportunities associated with the global sustainability transition."

More about Exchange Traded Funds and Enviromental, Social and Governance.

ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance. Investors are increasingly applying these non-financial factors as part of their analysis process to identify material risks and growth opportunities.

I had to look those up!

They have teamed up fairly recently with Oxford Uni in a five year agreement to look at ESG and sustainable investment so it is a space they are definitely attracted to. I always thought that shorting meant that you sold stock that you didn't have (borrowed or naked) rather than increasing a holding by at least 70% so I shall watch this one with contrarian interest.

Not to sure if Odier have increased their holding , but the downside is that they do have a reputation for being very astute shorters of stock , wonder what their plans are for sav. Maybe I should of sold my 5 million shares when they hit 3p.

Will we get any more holding announcements?

130 011 270 shares issued in the recent placing plus about 2M to pay the fees.

Lombard took 73 277 777 so another 56.73M still to be accounted for.

I suppose we should be excited the company now has about £1.7M after about £600K is deducted for next years salaries.

From the placing RNS:-

Focusing on the near term, the working capital secured by this placing will give Savannah a more robust financial position while it finalises an offtake agreement for the Project's lithium concentrate, continues its negotiations with potential strategic partners, progresses the Project's Definitive Feasibility Study ("DFS") towards completion, and responds to further information requests from Portugal's environmental regulator following the submission of the Project's Environmental Impact Assessment and Mine Plan in May.

"Finalises an offtake agreement" When have we heard that before?

"Continues its negotiations with potential strategic partners" How long has this been going on?

"Progresses the Project's Definitive Feasibility Study ("DFS") towards completion"

I thought the EIA had to be completed first.

"Responds to further information requests from Portugal's environmental regulator following the submission of the Project's Environmental Impact Assessment and Mine Plan in May."

If there are no requests we can expect this news in January but here he is preparing us for further requests which would add on a further 3 months.

Of course we could get news any time about the EIA and MP since these were expected about the 19th August.

It was good to hear they are working with our partner Rio Tinto to progress the 4.4Bt Mutamba mineral sands joint venture ("JV") project.

I had thought SAV were doing all the work!

Is SAV a buy again for me to add to my small holding?

I have been thinking about it as a very speculative buy. Perhaps a few for the time being but I'll hold off until the New Year for anything of size unless anyone can convince me his words aren't hollow yet again.
