Bailey's latest...

Sainsbury's have increased the price from £10 to £13 if paying via Nectar while Tesco have reduced from £11 to £10 when paying by Club Card.

Can always tell when a market becomes saturated, when the smaller companies end up in the hands of the industry giants - Fewer choices, more monopolies - how delightful!

Where I live there are only 2 places with in 20 miles where I can buy a computer - Curry's or an Apple shop and that's it, the only choices I have.

Look at the airline industry - in the late 1980's there were 33 independent UK airlines whereas today there are only 8 well 7 1/2 as British Airways is part of the IAG with Iberia.

In the Netherlands there were 5 independent airlines whereas to day there is only KLM which is only really 1/2 an airline as it merged with Air France Several year ago.

Spain Iberia own 4 of the 5 largest airlines in Spain and 73% of the aircraft with a further 11% being owned by an Iberia franchise airline, in years gone by they're all independent.

Less airline choice = Very little differentiation or choice in the service they offer their passengers and a massive, massive reduction in the quality of service they offer where airlines now treat their passengers little better than cattle being driven to market how delightful!!!

In the 1980's there were 164 Building societies in the UK, today there are only 43 - very little differentiation or choice in the products they now offer.

I'd agree that SBRY is hardly differentiated from the other sm chains. I bought my stake as part of my income port a very long time ago because I wanted a large retailer for diversification. If I was setting up the port now I'd prob exclude retailers altogether, they're just too risky. Many go bust, others as you suggest stagnate because they are unable to grow in a saturated market.

I hang on to SBRY because I hold long term for income and dump a share only if it goes very wrong, or occasionally when a much more attractive opportunity arises in another stock on a higher yield to increase income. Trailing yield on a divi of 13.1p at 275p is 4.8% which aint too bad.

A post specific to Sainsbury's...

How does Sainsbury's stand out from the crowd???? It doesn't is why in real terms profits go down each year and the dividend doesn't rise.

"If you're wondering why I did most the shopping for my wife's clothing etc"

I wasn't but thanks for the back-story anyway :)

I don't remember the exact price, what I remember was the number went down from 5 to 4 while the price remained the same as I recall having a chat to the sales assistant about it at the time.

If you're wondering why I did most the shopping for my wife's clothing etc - we lived overseas and a couple of times a year for a few days I came to the UK for training, bring with me a shopping list from my wife. remember it was in the days before on-line shopping had really got off the ground and one had to actually go into a shop to buy these things.

How on earth can you remember the price of your wife's knickers from M&S 8 years ago! More to the point, why would you want to?

I've been reading your supermarket shopping posts over many years. Take up a hobby for Gawdsakes and stop going into so many shops. You'll feel a lot better, I promise!

Shrinkflation has been going on for many years now.

I remember around 8 years ago buying my wife's knickers from M&S, same price, however 4 in the pack instead of 5 meant the price per knicker had actually gone up 25%.

Keyno - My teen comes shopping with me and I always let them choose a couple of meals themselves.

"Last week I bought a meal in Tesco, serves 4, it said when even putting lots of extras on the plate it barely served two of us."

With all the supermarket shopping you do I'd have thought you'd be a bit more savvy than believing a ready meal for 4 would serve 4 people, loganair.

How does Sainsbury's stand out from the crowd?

Sainsbury's needs to innovate to grow otherwise it will stay in Stagnation where the company has been over the past 10 years or so.

Is something going on, something happening that I do not know about?

Am I missing something?

Just popped in to by local Sainsbury's and where all the Bailey's and Sprits were, have been replaced by circa 300 cases of larger. Literally where one goes in through the barrier there are now circa 100 cases of Stella???

Always important to check the size as some of the shops selling to the lower socio-economic groups sell their Bailey's in 75cl bottles.

Even cheaper at Costco but for them there is an annual membership charge.
