Bookings for holidays to Portugal have gone "through the roof" after the country was added to the government's green travel list, Thomas Cook has said.

The European nation is one of just 12 destinations where travellers can visit from 17 May without needing to self-isolate upon their return to England.

On Friday night, Thomas Cook said it had taken more bookings for trips to Portugal in a single hour than it did in the whole of April.

I'm not too certain if they have increased prices to maintain margin with the 80% cap cruises?.

anton,

Yes, I'm already 100% back in Saga and very happy to be so.

I didn't want to broadcast that before when this BB was full of the multi-user name cretins, as I knew it would attract completely the wrong sort of attention.

I was very patient and waited until all of the potential hurdles that I was monitoring had been cleared.

Also to see Covid cases drop to extremely low levels in the UK and the vaccination program to be a success. Which, of course, it is - and with all of Saga's demographic able to be fully vaccinated well before our first sail date.

I'm in the lowest of the 9 original JCVI groups (ages 50 - 54) and even I am getting my 2nd jab on June 3rd, so could comfortably qualify for our first cruise.

The only minor item remaining for clarification now for me is whether, after June 21st when all Covid legal limits on social contact are removed, cruises will be proceeding with 80% or full capacity.

Assuming the current pattern of the government confirming each roadmap step 7 days in advance, full capacity permission may be confirmed on June 14th. That would enable a 2 week blitz marketing campaign to add the additional 200 passengers aboard the Spirit of Discovery departure on June 27th. And afterwards to the following cruises. Saga seem to have got their timings 100% spot on.

I would say that everything is now looking better than ever since Covid struck.

So I was not at all surprised to see Saga's CEO buy £198K of shares at £3.86 - he knows which way this is going to be going mid and long term.

Setanta's selling has been keeping a lid on prices here in the short term. We know that they reduced their final holding to under the 3% notifiable threshold on 9th April, so could be clear any day now. That's when I'd expect the share price here to start to move up very quickly indeed.

Given the earliest available cruise is now Aug 29th, I imagine they will be changing their pre-recorded message soon to say all ocean cruises booked until Sept :)

Good to hear. The message on the number I rang wasn’t clear at all. To be honest I’d have just bought more if they dropped significantly.

anton,

I don't think that you need to panic and I expect that your small holding in Saga will be getting a bit bigger next week, since it seems that that message is referring to the cruises cancelled earlier in the year when departures were reset to June 27th and July 26th.

Just to check I phoned the number 0800 051 3355 that was on a cruise letter that I received in the post from Saga yesterday. In the pre-recorded message before an operator takes the call in person, they state that:

"We are looking forward to returning to service on June the 27th. Our June and July cruises are now all sold out but we do have limited liability on cruise sailings later this year and 2022."

So all is looking pretty good. I also had a quick check on the website at:

We are looking forward to welcoming guests back onboard our brand-new sister ships, as we make our long-awaited return to service with a selection of cruises around the UK. Spirit of Discovery will set sail on June 27, 2021 and Spirit of Adventure will begin her inaugural season on July 26, 2021. We have received an overwhelming response to these new summer UK cruises, and they have now sold out.

You can still join us on board later this year and experience boutique cruising on Britain’s newest small ships Spirit of Adventure and Spirit of Discovery. We have limited availability for selected 2021 cruises so do not delay.

When you call the saga cruises number the message isn’t promising 0800 504505. Hate to say this as an investor although only a small holding but there might be a crash Monday. Hope not.

Could someone please confirm that all Saga cruises up to August 29 2021 have been sold out? If so that is surely extremely good news.

I ask because the website is showing no cruise departures available for sale before that date.

Good news only a few green countries.Means existing bookings for the sold out summer cruises to nowhere, won't be in a hurry to cancel/rebook for better travel options.Looking forward to EPS upgrades from 100% sold out summer cruises at near list prices. Profit levels will be amazing.Risk is govt not expanding green list much more by July, and the Aug-Oct cruises with port stops will have to be cancelled and converted to UK only cruises.
