Ryanair, which carries an average of 220,000 passengers each day, said it had been forced to cancel about 1,000 flights each day after European space was closed following the volcanic eruption in Iceland.

Going to be some bill.

Yep O'leary backpedalling but the wording of the law is that he is reqd to PROVIDE!! not cover the cost of accomodation/food etc. He failed to do this. He also failed inform his customers of their rights-another requirement in law.

Wide open to negligence suits for failure of 'Duty of care'

To be honest, his actions are bordering on criminal :)

Think Ryanair will be swamped with litigation relating to failure of duty of care+a hefty EU fine for same.O'leary deep in the realms of negligence.

I blame the Icelandic people for all of this stuff, they are very cold people and very envious about our beautiful & honest banking system ;-)

It's about time O'leary put up or shut up and get up in one of his aircarft and travelled all around Europe, doing some of his own testing and stop whinging about EU directives etc, no doubt they will be adding another blinding add on goodie "Volacanic Eruption duty" only £10 ew if you book before 01 May!

Ryanair's link to it's EU directive(duty of care) liability still remains inactive.

While they will be able to argue in court that their helpine phone numbers/website advice was swamped-as time passes,to not take additional action in an effort to APPLY!!!! duty of care will make them increasingly negligent.

Furthermore I notice that ryanair's disclaiming relating to eu directive has been removed from its website, however unless ryanair are now actively applying its duty of care obligation(it's now day 5) they are leaving themselves open to negligence suits for injury/pain/distress caused by their lack of action.

I really am surprised to see both this and BAY are not over 10% down today.

This volcanic situation is enuff to put ryanair in the ground. Their business model has made no provision for its liability under EU directive. Since all govt are confirming that airlines are liable under this directive and I can see none of them bailing RYA out, only conclusion that continuation of this crisis= ryanair bankrupt.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) said on Monday European governments' response to the volcano crisis was inadequate and estimated its economic impact to be greater than the 2001 Sept. 11 attacks.

Giovanni Bisignani, head of the IATA airline industry body, estimated airline revenue losses were now reaching $250 million a day, up from an earlier estimate of $200 million on Friday.

'April 13 (Bloomberg) -- Two Democratic U.S. senators introduced legislation that would ban airlines from charging fees for bags carried aboard planes one week after Spirit Airlines Inc. became the first carrier to announce a charge.'

Given all of these extra charges, i think it's only fair going forward, that airlines should start weighing passengers and charging accordingly.

THE Consumers' Association has described Ryanair's decision to increase baggage charges as an attack on families.

The airline said yesterday it would increase the online fee for checked-in baggage from €15 to €20 per bag during July and August, a hike of 33pc.

The new higher charges will apply to all bookings made after midnight tonight for flights during July and August, and will revert to the lower €15 rate in September
