this was a recent quote, commenting on their bad reputation for customer service; in a sector under immense downward pressure they can't afford to have this bandied about and it does them no good at all.

"Word on the street about Ryanair's reputation is that the customer is going to be left in the lurch."

Once war breaks out RYA will flood the market with 'free' seats, so they may well fare better than the likes of BAY and EZJ, who are dependent on the ticket revenue. I guess people will take more short breaks, rather than holidays. However, I cannot see the situation being resolved quickly. Yes, the US will have total air, sea and land surpemacy, but this time they have to remove Saddam from power once and for all. So will they march on Baghdad or hope that he flees from the country? It is not going to be easy, particularly if the arab world thinks that matters have been taken too far. The first sign of disharmony amongst the allies, will see the likes of France and Germany withdrawing their support. Troubled times are ahead

Good points Benchmark. To be perfectly honest, my intention is to run the short right up to the outbreak of the war. Tonights discovery of chemical warheads by the UN team, allows the US to table the necessary 'war' resolution. It will be intersting to see if the find is listed in the Iraqi declaration or can be classed as weapons of mass destruction.

Well ... the slide back you are seeing at the moment and in recent days is, I think, due to war risk. However, (a) all of Ryanair's activities are within Europe, and (b) you might remember how quickly Ryanair recovered after the market reaction to September 11.

Benchmark, that all pre supposes that air travel is not disrupted by the pending war. Have analysts factored that in, I suspect not

Their margins are paper thin, they rely on volume.Emm, if that drops, it all goes to the bottom line. (or rather disappears from it).
EDIT. Sorry, I forgot to say, they rely on 'other services', don't they.

I think the low cost airline will go down because they are valued on profit growth that won't be achieved. i also think that a small drop off in pasengers per plane will have a dissproportinate impact in the same way that increasing passengers have impacted profits upwards

change of emphasis now. Any mark ups by the mm's are being sold into. Interestingly we are at support just as the Dow hits critical support at 8750. Like you say huwrayhenry, if it doesn't bounce from here it will drop to 412 and then 400p. I am not closing my short

I don't think it is surprising that all the free seats were not taken up over Christmas. Traditionally people prefer to stay at home with their families at Christmas so, even though the seats were free, it is not a time that a lot of people choose to travel.

RYA and EZJ shares are more likely to go down than up merely because it takes positive news to move the price up whereas inertia or the possibility of a conflict will let the shares drift.

I am flying to Spain soon for £25 return. It costs me more than that on a train for a day return to London. To those of us who cannot get enough of travelling the low-cost flights are beyond our wildest dreams. Unfortunately the majority of the public relies on scare stories in the papers or one bad experience told to them by a friend rather than trying the service for themselves.
