Strike could close airport
From The Chigwell Guardian

STANSTED Airport may be forced to close after firefighters and security staff voted to stage a series of six one-day strikes.o

Airport operator BAA is now developing specific contingency plans after Transport and General Workers Union (T&GWU) members voted in favour of industrial action over a pay dispute last Thursday.

The series of walkouts, which are due to run between next Thursday and Thursday, January 2, could see the airport closed on strike days, causing major disruption to travellers over the Christmas holiday period.

T&GWU national secretary for aviation Tim Lyle said the planned strikes were a result of the "sheer frustration" felt by airport workers over BAA's 1.7 per cent pay offer.

Mr Lyle said: "The vote in favour of strike action represents the sheer frustration at the company's offer, given the increased workloads and responsibilities placed upon BAA employees following September 11.

"Coupled with the knowledge that traffic figures have improved and the company is in profit, our members justifiably feel that the pay offer falls short of what they deserve."

BAA says the deal amounts to six per cent over two years and is fair given the economic difficulties facing the aviation industry. The company is now seeking the involvement of arbitration service ACAS over the strike action proposals.

BAA group services director Tony Ward said: "Our terms of employment are highly competitive and our pay offer is well above the rate of inflation. It is better than an offer the union representatives originally recommended to their members.

"In the interests of maintaining the public services we provide, we will be pressing for the involvement of ACAS to bring this matter to an early conclusion."

500,000 FREE SEATS TO CELEBRATE RECORD GROWTH IN PASSENGER NUMBERS
Ryanair, Europe's only low fares airline, today (Thursday 14th November 2002) announced a massive free Seat Sale to celebrate a record 8 million passengers flown in the six months ended the 30th September 2002. As a thank you to these passengers who have made this stunning result possible, Ryanair is offering 500,000 seats across its entire network for free - all passengers have to do is pay the taxes and charges. These seats will be available for flying in December and January and will be available every day on every route.

Announcing the Seat Sale today Ryanair's Commercial Director, Michael Cawley said:

"We are thrilled to have flown almost 8 million passengers in the six months to the end of September and are on track to fly 15 million passengers in our full financial year. The 37% rise in passenger numbers is a testament to the industry leading service, which Ryanair is providing at the lowest fares. Ryanair's service is simply the best, with our performance in punctuality attracting more and more passengers to the airline. Ryanair is also the only airline to publish customer service statistics, proving that our numbers of bags lost and complaints per passenger are lower than our competitors.

"We understand that all our passengers have a choice and that it is only by offering the best service at the lowest fares that we can continue to grow our business as we have done so in the past. For now however, we just want to say a huge thank you to the 8 million passengers who flew with us in the first six months by offering 500,000 free seats across the entire network between December and January.

"As always there is undoubtedly going to be phenomenal demand for this offer so book early on www.ryanair.com to ensure you get the dates of your choice."

My apologies Benchmark, I haven't been back to this thread for a while. Mitzis was right in saying that the person was heading for a conference in Birmingham.
It will be interesting to see how today's news of the killing of US Embassey official in Jordan has on the industry. Hopefully, the likes of RYA will be unaffected

Ryanair is heading for a nose dive
By Jeff Randall (Filed: 23/06/2002)

First the disclaimer. During the past four years, I've been predicting that Ryanair's extraordinary journey from obscurity to Europe's No1 no-frills operator would end in tears. Hitherto, I've been completely wrong.

But I simply refuse to accept that a company with such a cavalier disregard for customer relations can sustain market leadership in a service industry. I still believe that the upstart Irish carrier and its garrulous chief executive, Michael O'Leary, are heading for trouble.

O'Leary's business philosophy is simple: Ryanair charges the lowest fares, so passengers have no grounds for complaint when the plane is late or bags are lost (which they often are). For a tenner there and back, what do the punters expect?

I am with you mate. EJZ is also on a crazy valuation. The truth is out
there and will come out. Falling passenger numbers will get people thinking.

Isobel - in this case the chart confirms the gullability of certain institutions, imo, this deserves to be 150 at best. (How can 4 ppl fly Prestwick Dublin return for £44.40 ??? Thats £10.10 each inclusive... beats me)

Bad business model, bad service = no repeat business. I think they make more from their £1 a minute telephone "help" lines than their flights....

Jeff Randall was SO right.... regards, A
