Sir Stelios and 'FastJet' Scheduled to Depart Soon from Africa
December 15, 2011 at 8:32 AM

When we least heard from Sir Stelios there was news about a potential new low-cost carrier that would focus on more long-haul routes. We guess the potential for cheap flights between London and New York is still there, but now it sounds like his low-cost model is shifting to a different continent altogether.

The founder of easyJet is thinking that the next great success in the airline industry will take place in Africa. He's already working to get funding in place, and there are some deals being done between his group and Rubicon Diversified Investments in hopes of creating a new low-frills, low-cost airline. The placeholder name-FastJet-is now apparently the working name of the new air venture.

Apparently some planes have already been ordered; we're just awaiting the first photos of a snazzy FastJet logo and color scheme. The terms of the deal-think of Stelios' group as consultants-allow for the FastJet name to be used on an interim basis of like a year, but if things take off then that'll probably be the name for pretty much forever.

There's still a lot of stuff to figure out-like what countries and cities to fly to and from. However, we're thinking that there's definitely some potential here for those looking to head in and around Africa both safely and cheaply. Let's just hope they have at least one feeder flight from somewhere in Europe, so we can just swing down for a visit next time we're in the neighborhood.

I think Rubicon will do a reverse takeover with another airline, possibly fly 540, they will probably rebrand it as Fastjet.com. Doing this will mean that they will be up and runing faster. If they set up from scratch then the problem they will have is that £9million cash pile will get swallowed up quicky in the set up. Africa is a difficult market to operate an airline and has a lot of red tape.

The Directors were clever to take advantage of the Marketing done to promote the partnership by issuing the £9m of share, The next stage is how they utilise the money.

If they set up an airline in competition to Fly 540 I think there will be a conflict of interest with the Directors. In one of the news articles they mentioned that the directors have not rule out joining with Fly 540.

My bet is that they will join with Fly 540.

I can see this stock falling in the shortterm purely because of the massive increase in share price over the month and people not realising the full potential of this stock, however Friday will be aninteresting day as the new shareholders will be traded I wonder what will happen up or down? Once Rubicon announce how they are going to launch fastjet this share will increase until then this stock is very risky.

You're a bit late as they've already raised over £9m and Sir Stelios the successful millionaire entrepreneur is at the controls . . .

Robert Burnham, Rubicon's chairman, said: "Sir Stelios has brought in a pre-eminent aviation management team, David and Geoff bring enormous experience in Africa and Rubicon now have a few quid in the bank to make this venture work."

Following the meeting, Mr Lenigas said that Sir Stelios will be guiding Rubicon as it sets up the low-cost airline, but the company would respect existing agreements between Sir Stelios and easyGroup.

Rubicon raises £9m for low-cost African airline
By Arash Massoudi

Rubicon, a cash shell, has raised £9m through a placing that will fund the launch of fastjet.com, a low-cost African airline that it is developing in conjunction with Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, founder of easyJet.

The placing was approved at a shareholder meeting on Wednesday, along with last month's agreement to explore African aviation sector opportunities between the company and Sir Stelios's EasyGroup.

Under the agreement, Rubicon will receive exclusive branding rights to fastjet.com from EasyGroup for 12 months in exchange for a payment of £480,000, a 5 per cent stake in the company and further royalty fees.

Shareholders also approved the appointment to the board of David Lenigas and Geoffrey White, respectively chairman and chief executive of Lonrho, the Africa-focused conglomerate. Lonrho, which already runs an airline in Africa, has bought a 12.7 per cent stake in the company.

"We are not planning to create world war three with Easyjet, but there is space in the sky for another airline," Mr Lenigas said.

Under the terms of the agreement with easyGroup, Rubicon would have 12 months to either take delivery of a "western-standard jet aircraft" or complete a reverse-takeover of another company. That has led to speculation that the company may be looking to acquire Lonrho's pan-African regional airline, Fly540.

In July, Lonrho signed an agreement to use Sir Stelios' easyHotel brand for a network of 50 hotels operated by the conglomerate across Africa by 2016. Mr Lenigas said those talks fed directly into discussions about a launch of fastjet.com.

When asked if Rubicon would be looking to acquire Fly540 or easyHotel from Lonrho in the coming year, Mr Lenigas said he was unable to rule that out but that the company was looking at a range of options.

Rubicon said the placing valued individual shares at 4p and would amount to 75 per cent of its shares in issue. Rubicon shares closed down 22.54 per cent at 4.13p.

Separately, Lonrho on Wednesday launched a placing and open offer to raise £27m to invest in the agriculture, oil and minerals sectors in Africa.

anyway enjoy youre rubi...2 things will happen here..either the 4p placees are holding shares and share price will rerate as the "easy model" takes off... or they will sell and share price will be hammered back down to 3p? 2p? 1p?...they will then be able to get back their stock and make on way back up...so question is which will it be???

hence only keeping 10001 share....and will wait to see what the big boys are going to do ..will become evident as we go through december/january? good luck all

Do you mean this funding that was announced after your infamous phone call . . .

"The Placing has been carried out at a 38 per cent. premium to the closing mid market price of the Company's shares of 13.75p on 24 August 2011 and the net proceeds of the Placing will be used by the Company to fund the further procurement of long lead capital items on which the Company has various holding deposits."
