Take off within the year the new adventure of the unstoppable Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, who with his easyGroup has founded, inter alia, easyJet. This is the low cost carrier regional Fastjet.com, based in West Africa, at Accra's Kotoka Airport in Ghana, where it lacks a national carrier.

The birth of Fastjet.com is co-financed by British Rubicon Diversified Fund Investments. Stated objective: the introduction of a continent, affordable air travel to support the growth of tourist traffic and local business travel.

A colossal potential
For the airport of Kotoka (but also in Lagos, Nigeria), in the heart of the emerging market in Ghana, Airbus estimates foresee a traffic of 10,000 long-range passenger per day by 2030, which would bring in the top six of the African continent.

The feasibility study carried out by the easyGroup – noted the enormous growth potential in West Africa and the weak air – links to Fastjet.com suggests connections with six countries in the region to grow up to a fortnight, already take off with a fleet of 15 aircraft, all leased to deliver soon at least five million passengers per year.

But the aim, much more ambitious, is quickly becoming the first Pan-African carrier. What still failed to Fly540, another low cost (capital) based in Nairobi, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Sudan and Burundi.

Emirates, Air Nigeria, and Iberia
Accra Kokota airport is the fourth in West Africa for traffic volumes, with about 28,000 passengers a week, preceded by Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, all three in Nigeria. Emirates Air Nigeria here and compete for the leadership with capacity supply quotas were almost 13% each. It is already served by foreign carriers, 23 of which non-African: from 11 June also comes with two Iberia flights a week from Madrid.

At the time the largest carrier of Ghana is Antrak Air, owned by local investors, which only operates domestic flights with a small fleet of ATR 42 and turboprop Beech 1900D. And from September 2011 there is also Starbow Airlines, which with BAe 146 (the so-called "jumbolino") operates only domestic connections.

Low cost carriers currently have only 1% of market share in West Africa, while South Africa work 45% of domestic capacity. According to analysts of the easyGroup to curb the growth of the segment you combine problems of various kinds, from lack of liberalisation legislation, infrastructure and security systems, management difficulties. And yet he already asked Fastjet.com flying rights to Senegal, Cameron, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Benin.

The Latest on FastJet's Low-cost Flight Plans for Africa and Beyond

March 8, 2012 at 9:02 AM

Not that long ago we were all intrigued about what Sir Stelios (of EasyJet) was up to, and what he had planned for residents and travelers looking to hop around much of Africa. Well, it sounds like one of the continent's first true low-cost carriers is still in the planning stages, but with a little more progress, Stelios' FastJet might be up in the air doing its thing sooner than later.

The latest news is that the airline may head up into the skies within the next several months, so we wouldn't find it unusual to see flights operating between now and the end of 2012. Officials at the airline are looking to initially gain access to like 15 planes to help them achieve their travel goals.

It sounds like one of the latest updates is that Sir Stelios is ready to give a little PowerPoint to potential investors about how awesome his plans are and how they'll all make buckets of money.

Obviously much can change about where the airline will eventually fly to and fly from, but for now there's news that Accra, Ghana should serve as the airline's hub with flights to around six other spots in the Western half of the continent.

It sounds like there's still much to be decided between Sir Stelios and Rubicon-the cash behind the option-but at least it sounds like they're all headed in the right direction.

tom

i reckon an RTO price could be between 6 & 8p

Lohnro need to have someone that stands the best chance of making the best of what is currently a bad thing. Fly 540 lost £7.9m (excluding head office costs) on £14.5m revenue in 6 months to 30 Sept!

An RTO price say 7p will 'reward' those that have already invested in the start-up shell, and those invested @ 4p issue.

For Lohnro to off-load a failing operation and to then have majority share holding in the new venture that turns it all around makes for a win-win situation.

Stellios, being a major share holder of easyjet, and contolling the easygroup, gets to tap-off naming rights and royalties and still has the option of taking a direct major stake in Rubicon and the new operation.

As long as the business model works in Ghana, (fuel prices, ticket prices, airport duties, government taxes etc) this surely will be a success?

I will be interested to hear your thoughts.

We'll have to await the details on that - institutions were in at 4p per share so i reckon share RTO at around that level - they have £9mill in cash - £450k for stelios et al - It also depends on how it is shown and marketed - But it does look very serious -

There's a very serious plan to make Rubicon into a very serious low-cost carrier," said David Lenigas, a Rubicon board member and chairman of Lonrho.

sounds good, wonder what price we'll comback at?

My view wisteria is that Stelios is the king of low budget travel - If anyone can break the red tape in Africa with an already mentioned airline (which gives them a headstart) the he can probably do it -

It could be the beginning of an Easyjet for Africa - without being directly competitive to Easyjet -

No mate, was looking at it but didn't like the fact someone was selling below the bid last few days.

Hope it comes back and storms ahead for you.

Not much point speculating now until the doc is released and etails of RTO announced.

No i think he was trying to pick up stock as cheaply as possible - There will be a placing but i reckon on similar terms to the last i.e around 4p per share -

I did have a look at fly540 yesterday and they are rapidly expanding with a new link to other parts o Africa - Stelios is king of low budget airlines so one has to be reflective and take his position on RUBI seriously
