18/1/2018 13:46 | Nicely put, good article.I wonder as well what impact in UK will have a sugar tax on drinks Coca Cola already said they shrinking the bottles from 1.75L to 1.5L and I'm sure consumption of the drinks will be the same as before if not more, which means that they will need to produce more plastic bottles, I wonder how many other manufactures will follow the same process | sharki9
18/1/2018 13:16 | The Spectator on the “truth about plastic”: Consider the tobacco industry ... the more restrictive, the higher the price! Consider the green energy policy .... led to “fuel poverty”! Consider palm oil and deforestation. Consider ethanol and the price of maize. | sogoesit
17/1/2018 19:04 | Sentiment towards plastic use might be changing, but it won’t go away. Plastics will continue to be used and touch us in nearly every walk of life. Food packaging, is excuse the pun a drop in the ocean. Eliminating this would have a limited impact, might make us feel better, but what about all the big ticket items where plastic use is in much greater use. RPC as a leading plastics manufacturer should view this sentiment as a business opportunity, not a threat. To be at the forefront of technological advancement is where they need to align. If they can place themselves in the eye of plastic advancement in recycling they will hit a sweet spot. Remember that as developing countries gain traction what will increase in use... plastic. I’m more concerned about trading than sentiment... let’s wait and see. | jifster
17/1/2018 17:27 | this company has had its chips and they won't be wrapped in plastic. its not sentiment its an awakening to the problems we are storing up for the future. | notimpressed
17/1/2018 16:13 | If we finish like this or similar level we might have a hammer on the daily candle. | sharki9
17/1/2018 15:33 | Thanks Builder Bob - a very helpful and informed post. | fez77
17/1/2018 15:24 | Lots of small sells today , a lot of small investors have panicked, need trading update from RPC | swanseayellow

17/1/2018 12:33 | To be fair to the plastics packaging industry, they are producing goods to a specification which suits the manufacturer of the goods packsged. Biodegradable packaging would suit a very large percentage of products but consider the needs of manufacturers who have to prevent the product from escaping such as bleach, motor oil etc.where degrading of the packaging would cause leakage and reduce the shelf life of the product What would Sainsbury or Tesco do with all the bleach type products when the degrading starts. Also a considerable number of manufactureres, parti I feel the answer lies on two fronts.First industry in general must be made more responsible for the disposal of its packaging after sales, manufacturers making products whch require non biodefradable packaging should be involved in the recycling of the packaging and secondly the generel public must be more aware of the desirability of recycling. This of coourse will require a lot more investment in the recycling industry to make it easier to access. In the meantime it seems that poor old RPC are “taking the can back” for the whole of industry.no pun intended | builder bob
17/1/2018 10:54 | Ultimately the answer will probably lie in the increased use of Biodegradable plastics and I suppose RPC could lead the way in that respect - depending on their ability to move in that direction. A statement of intent from them in that connection might be helpful?? | fez77
17/1/2018 10:50 | Oil price rise also hitting margins. | elsa7878
17/1/2018 10:37 | Plastic bashing is a cause celebre at present! Ironically, waste collection in UK results in very little plastic (from UK)being disgorged into the oceans. | fez77
17/1/2018 10:27 | Sentiment is NOT with RPC at the moment, best time to buy IMO and then wait. | oli12
17/1/2018 07:57 | ASDA own brand plastic free by 2023 doesn't help either | prokartace
16/1/2018 16:08 | Agreed, the fall is probably overdone but the publicity surrounding plastic doesn’t seem to want to go away. The statement yesterday from Carclo will not have helped. | kendaljohn
16/1/2018 16:05 | the fall here is overdone imo | swedeee
16/1/2018 15:01 | I would have thought that recent media talk about building roads using recycled plastic that are cheaper and longer lasting than bitumen would have been bullish for the company | prokartace
16/1/2018 10:45 | Downgraded by Berenberg 'buy' to 'hold'... tp 920p cut from 1120p | philanderer
16/1/2018 05:30 | As usual there’s also going to be a lot of confusion in people’s heads about what to do. On the one hand there’s corporate policy for a 100% re-cycle, avoiding anything to do with lumber (cutting down the rain-forest syndrome): and on the other hand there’s going to potentially be a move back to paper-based packaging: Given this environmental conflict product needs still to be distributed: product like food that needs protection FROM the environment (oxygen) and product that needs to be protected from escaping TO the environment. Where this complex system goes is anyone’s guess. But given the long target dates it looks like it will be a while which also indicates that it really is complex! In between there will be lots of room for propaganda, myth building and social peer pressure. How we all react as consumers will probably be the key... and who knows where that will end! I think DYOR is a good start! | sogoesit

11/1/2018 19:26 | Hope it's a plastic cup that is half full rather than a glass.... | bsdjj
11/1/2018 18:59 | Surely as Europe's leading rigid plastic container manufacturer, RPC are well placed to capitalise on any changes downstream. See this very much as an opportunity not a threat and my glass remains half full. | cheshire pete
11/1/2018 17:33 | I would recommend people take a look at the sustainability section on the RPC website - this is clearly something they are paying a lot of attention to and seem to have all sorts of initiatives to reducing waste and make products more environmentally friendly. As I've said before, the company could help provide solutions to any clampdown on plastic waste. | riverman77
11/1/2018 13:30 | RPC have a R&D unit within British polythene working on recycling plastic, in time I’m sure they will solve this , but all this is good news for those who have short positions in RPC , I expect a stunning set of upcoming results coupled with news of a large acquisition and a very enticing rights issue , possibly £5 to get the hedge funds to recall borrowed shares and taking out all the short positions, at which point these parasites will move on to their next victim | swanseayellow |
