day traders are shorters
they try to sell high and buy low or vv on low volumes
real shorters, like hf, sell high consistently in high volumes.
they don't care if they drive a company to carey street. sociopaths to a man [?]

Like Steptoe, I invest as a medium-long term holder, rather than more risky short term play.
Happy with business prospects, happy to give BOD benefit of doubt on acquisition smoke and sentiment currently low giving favourable share price
All IMO. Last bought in at 797.

Why did you buy in the first place?

I am a long term holder so cant help you, however if the gap fills and the price then strengthens I will be buying some more. Note dividend is ex rights tomorrow at 17.9p so price drop from here to £8.55 tomorrow will be likely but mean your buyin price will be 17.9p lower ie £8.22

Three things I think

1. There was quite a recovery following the AGM statement helped by them buying back shares for 12 days. The buy back has now paused so not surprising the shares are taking a breather. Obviously there will be an XD fall tomorrow so presumably not much point in them continuing for a while.
2. Trading statement pre half year results not due until end September
3. Market itself is weak today on world news.

Plastics environmental pollution is a fact. Sooner or later it will become a major issue, especially in the Marine Environment. However, it's also a fact that at the moment, we can't do without it. It's a 'catch 22'. I'm sure in the long term technology will solve the problem, but in the meantime it's a great investment opportunity (no matter how ethically unpalatable this may be). In my opinion there's no better company to gain good returns from than RPC, they are less affected by Brexit as 80% of their earnings are generated overseas. It's a cruel world so ride it !

True, but every compost or decay process does the same, as does every breath we take. Which is the lesser of evils?

May be wrong but I'm led to believe that the product you mention from Symphony International causes greenhouse gasses to be released during the degradation process which is one of the reason it hasn't taken off.

If and when it becomes viable to make all plastic packaging biodegradable then I'm fairly certain that the likes of RPC and the other big players will be fighting one another to take it to market first.

Share tip of the week from The Share Centre

Each week, our analysts put the spotlight on a company from our list of recommended shares to buy. As always, it's recommended as a medium/long term investment (approximately 18 to 36 months). This week's share tip of the week is...

RPC (RPC)

Thanks for that info cashcow5, as far as recycling is concerned, but I do think UK govt and companies such as RPC could do more to support biodegradable plastics, particularly in throw-away packaging. Symphony Environmental have been struggling for years to get their D2P additive adopted more widely; currently aiui its mandatory in one or more small Gulf states whilst the Western world throws up hands in horror at the billions of tons of waste plastic in the oceans and land-fill but does little. [Rant over]
BTW I have no current holding in SYM, but have long been and still am a fan of RPC. First bought in in 2004, added rights @ 143 (2011) 320 (2015) 450 (2016) and 665 (2017). Sharescope tells me my annual return has been 21.1% (including dividends). I've taken half my profits still leaving on the table a holding valued at near six figures, having originally invested just under £1k (but more since of course).

Perhaps we can all agree that a reasonably long period of consolidation and organic growth (as opposed to the potential M&A overstretch) will be welcome. This company has a good track record of excellent management both at main board level and sub-grade level. Unfortunately they are and probably will always be, vulnerable to the market 'shorts' cowboys.
