It’s not in either OPEC or Russia’s interest to pump out oil at this price
Once the reality of not being able to fund their budgets I expect an accommodation will be reached.

This has happened before and the world has bounced back. The same will happen again, the big boys cannot let global economy crash longer term Personally, with a 3 year horizon, I think we're looking at a lot of gains in the right companies.Saudi and Russia toying with the oil price is my concern here in addition to Corona

In my view there is over reaction to everything and zero coordination around the world on how to manage the issue. This is leading to regular bombing of bad press leading to panic and fear everywhere. In 2014 Shell had massive challenge as oil price collapsed and they just made a massive gas investment. The company survived and changed its strategy to become leaner and cost effective without divi cut. I expect only the same and I will continue to invest as funds become available month by month on my first choice ... RDSB. I guess most have massive paper losses since this fiasco of FTSE started near FEB21, but that what they are and if you are in solid companies with good paying dividend then that’s riding the storm and recovery in 2021/22 ..

This is being downgraded as a sell by the city despite the current yield and dividend track record. The city is perhaps certain a dividend cut is to come at these oil prices which are likely to be suppressed into the summer. News coming out of Russia and Saudi suggest we may not have a truce for a while...So tempted to drip feed in here and accumulate but currently burnt at Vodafone ... Moreover, don't see any near term catalyst for a price rebound just yet. Need a beacon of hope somewhere. If the US announces measures to support the Shale industry there in the short term then that's going to further affect the oil price... Too much downside risk in the near term I reckon...What's everyone doing? Waiting and watching? ATBP2

Essential Investor,

RIO has big divis - not including the specials. Also, during the 2016 mining bust it didn't suffer quite as much as some others whose share price contracted by many multiples. They're a big operation, all over the world.

I was most attracted by their divi and the fact they couldn't be picked up for pennies in 2016, despite losing a lot of value.

Oddly, iron ore seems to be holding up at the moment from what I hear, and RIO mines a lot of it (and other stuff, like copper etc).

Miners do best when the world economy is going gangbusters and suffer a lot when it isn't, but I think RIO is my compromise candidate for a big resources company. Billiton looks good too, but I have no price data for it before 2018 (on ADVFN charts) so was unable to see how it reacted to the mining bust in 2016.

Apologies as slightly off topic - does anyone think the major miners are
worth considering near these levels ...?

Before anyone laughs!, I'm guessing big fiscal programmes, infrastructure spending etc,
on the way in multiple major economies...

It's BHP I have in mind, they own some oil interests.

ROYALALBERT,

I don't think you want to ask how much profit RDS will make - too tricky to answer. A simpler question is whether they'll still be in business at the end of a year of those prices - I think the answer is yes. Some smaller oil companies won't be.

Also, Shell has paid rheir dividend without exception since 1945 - if not in cash then in scrip (so I beleieve). That's some record.

@ROYALALBERT

Between 2015 and 2016, we had $0.31 and $0.58 earnings per share - this was during the last time crude prices were depressed.

Dividend was of course fully maintained throughout those 2 years at $1.88 per share, as Shell recognizes the cyclical nature of earnings and has huge cash reserves to balance a few quarters of market weakness.

Thankfully, Shell's asset portfolio has been significantly improved since 2015/16, so EPS may be materially better than the figures above under similar conditions.

I hope that helps.
