Canada has issued its numbers too - their change in employment is almost exactly -2m and their unemployment rate is 13%. Perhaps we'll see some developed countries in Western Europe at somewhat similar levels in due course???

NFP comes in at 20.5m and an unemployment rate of 14.7%. No big surprises really.

The DOW has been trading up, mostly in the 200-400 pt range on IG, overnight and continues to do so as I type this.

Kashakri (Cash n' Carry) has been speaking and says the real unemployment rate is 24%....

The real reason it's not 16 or 17% as reported is only people who are reported as looking for work are being counted and not those sheltered in place without work yet equally unemployed!!

Another 3.169m initial jobless claims last week. Continuing claims are running at 22.647m.

For tomorrow's NFP, the consensus is around 22m, from several reputable sources, although it's all unprecedented stuff. Historic times.

pf you have folk thinking that you are a paid up member of the liberal elite.

Did I mention that my 36 year old son and his young family had a bad dose.

They live, and he works, in central London and he was infected by a colleague who brought it back from a business trip overseas, some weeks before it became rampant.

They didn't enjoy the experience at all. Had all the classic symptoms, including loss of smell and taste.

Reference the above, this excerpt from the FT:

The scale of mortality by the third week of April suggests that, based on Financial Times estimates, at present the UK death toll from the virus is 53,800.

Just listening to the FT being interviewed on the World Service about the true number of excess deaths so far. It is 42,000 according to ONS, far above the 29 thousand odd from the daily news conference. Google has this:

UK death toll from virus becomes highest in Europe ... The Office for National Statistics on Tuesday said 42,000 more people than normal had died in the UK ... This includes excess deaths for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

In the US, ahead of Friday's monthly NF Payroll number, the latest ADP employment change has come in at -20.236m - there's never been a number like it, of course.

Plenty more of this type of shocking data to come...

portside - 2 children per couple - natural selection will thin the herd that way. go down to one child per family will reduce the population too quickly. But i agree there now needs to be some serious limits. It will also disuade the stay at home mums (sorry polite way of saying scratters that pop out kids to claim benefits and not go to work).
