What will the government target price be to start reducing is going to be key certainly not going to be selling at such silly prices.

"RBS likely to foot a bill of nearly $13bn to settle legacy mortgage issue"

Google has an article by a US organization called Trefis, headquartered in Boston, that I've never heard of. You have to register to read it, no thanks. So I'm posting this merely to show that at least one analysis is being pitched above the sort of $10bn level being kicked around. There's probably going to be a lot of this speculative stuff in the weeks ahead, to put it mildly.

Quietish start today, but not too bad considering the various headwinds.

Again whatever the DoJ sets it’s fine at is not the same as the level settled, as we saw with the $14bn demand from Deutsche Bank and the $7.2bn settlement three months later.

The initial demand is always negotiated lower, principally because the Claimant will always have to show pragmatism and recognise the litigation costs and time delays involved in making appeals etc.

For me something around $10bn as a starting point is a good number, and certainly already reflected in the RBS valuation which is already trading 13% or $6bn below its tangible book value.

Just read the Sky article - good spot, Raffles.

It would be great if the fine could be settled in Q2, rather than dragging on into H2. The AGM is usually in early May, so it could perhaps be treated by RBS as a target date, but, as a minimum, there should be a formal update then. Last weekend, the ST mentioned that the bank would like to pay an interim this year (post on iii), so a Q2 settlement would fit well in that regard too.

Overall, I see it as a positive for the market and this update should help to rally the share price from yesterday's official low at 254.30p. Last night, the FTSE ended around 60 pts up, on IG, so we may see a decent open on Monday, provided nothing adverse happens this weekend.
