Within those aggregates there will be many individual policies that make a "profit" and a significant minority which make a "loss."

Is the fact that insurance companies are trying to make a profit a good reason not to insure my house?

Interesting. Some more of the upside and some more of the downside have been removed. RKH is hardly risk free but undoubtedly a very different proposition these days. Both the extreme bulls and the extreme bears are looking a bit out of place.
