This is due to many factors including, the eventual release of the hostage sheep ? near Goose Green, and that another 12 bottles of the finest Chardonnay are delivered for the Port Stanley barman and his dog. 28/8/2024 13:40 | On August thirteenth, the period for interested parties to submit their opinions, proposals, consultations, regarding the Environmental Impact Statement, EIS, presented by the Israeli/American oil company Navitas Petroleum, which is scheduled to drill more than twenty wells in the Sea Lion field, in waters north of the Falkland Islands with a view to extracting crude oil, ended. The EIS featured Sea Lion Development Phase 1 and Phase 2 reports, which were made public and distributed to stakeholders, and as of 13 this month, 25 responses had been submitted by individuals, businesses and other organisations alongside submissions made by the Islands' own Government Departments. The 25 responses have been shared with the oil company itself, which has 28 days from August 13, to review them and submit them to the Executive Council of the Islands, after which they will also be made public. In the midst of the atmosphere of enthusiasm that the launch of the oil industry has generated among many in the Islands, as in the rest of the world, there are voices that do not agree in their entirety, particularly with regard to some technical, environmental and social aspects. These include a report by Falklands Conservation, a not-for-profit scientific organisation specialising in the defence and conservation of the environment, and other social and economic observations by the Secretary of the Falkland Islands Employees' Union, Emma Brook. In the first case, the speaker is Andy Stanworth, Conservation Manager of Falklands Conservation, who said that "as an organization we cannot support the EIS proposal, something that should not surprise anyone: we are an environmental organization with a vision of an environment that works well, with several decades of research that show that emissions are the generators of the climate change that we suffer globally. Climate change is one of the most significant, if not the most significant, elements of having impacts on wildlife, the environment and humanity in general.""Internatio | ![]() gozzie2 | |
