The Government of Tierra del Fuego issued a credible injunction against the company Harland and Wolff, based in the United Kingdom, for attempting to carry out the construction of a new port in the Malvinas Islands without due intervention and authorization from the provincial authorities. 14 JUNE 2024The Ministry of Production and Environment, as the authority responsible for the application of Law No. 55, in coordination with the Secretariat of Malvinas, Antarctica, South Atlantic Islands and International Affairs, issued the summons in accordance with the 1965 Hague Convention on Communication or Service of Judicial or Extrajudicial Documents in Civil or Commercial Matters (approved by Law 25.097). Harland and Wolff were expressly summoned, through the British central authority and in accordance with Article 10 of the aforementioned Agreement, to comply within ninety working days with the provisions of National Law No. 25,675 "General Law of the Environment", Provincial Law No. 55 and Provincial Law No. 1,126. under threat of initiating the pertinent legal actions.In this regard, the Secretary of Malvinas, Antarctica, South Atlantic Islands and International Affairs, Andrés Dachary, specified that "the hiring of the company Harland and Wolff by the illegitimate and alleged island government to carry out this work is part of the British claim to establish the infrastructure aimed at transforming the port of the Malvinas Islands into a logistics support center, in order to advance in the illegal exploitation of the natural resources that belong to all Fuegians, also representing a flagrant violation of the resolutions of the General Assembly of the United Nations that urge the parties to refrain from adopting decisions that imply the introduction of unilateral modifications in the situation while the Islands are going through the process of decolonization"."That is why, as in 2021, when the British government attempted a similar maneuver through the Bam Nuttall company and the province intimated it, the corresponding legal actions were taken in order to guarantee our provincial rights and interests," the official stressed.
