Falkland Gold abandons drilling search   January 18, 2008 1:49 am by Dino MahtaniFalkland Gold & Minerals, the Aim-traded miner, has terminated its drilling operations in the Falkland Islands after its three-year exploration campaign failed to find commercial quantities of gold.The shares on Thursday dipped ½p to 4¼p after the company said it intended to deploy its remaining £3.5m cash balance, exploration team and drill rigs to "prospective areas elsewhere in the world".Richard Linnell, chairman, said the company had spent £5.5m on exploration over four years and had decided late last year to end its quest for gold on the islands if no significant finds had been identified by the end of last year.The company, and its investors, had decided to invest in exploration in the Falklands on the basis that the islands were once part of a prehistoric continent that once included gold-rich South Africa."It had got to the stage where we would have been throwing good money after bad," said Mr Linnell.The company is expected to pass a resolution identifying its strategy at the annual meeting in March. At present, it does not have any further mining licenses to explore.Mr Linnell said he was considering other projects but in the interim the company would be able to raise further cash and remain in existence as a drilling services company.The company, which is today valued at £3.3m, has seen its fortunes dwindle sharply since it came to Aim in 2004.By contrast, its sister company, Falkland Oil and Gas, which was spun off from the same parent company, Falkland Island Holdings, has seen relative success.Earlier this year, BHP Billiton raised interest in the oil company by buying a 40 per cent stake in its licences.https://youtu.be/NwzaxUF0k18L#NATICS
