In the RNS at end of Thursday, with results of the AGM, it says "The Company notes that Resolution 21 'Authority to purchase Rio Tinto plc shares' was passed with less than 80% of votes in favour. Shining Prospect (a subsidiary of the Aluminium Corporation of China "Chinalco") voted against Resolution 21. Chinalco has not sold any of its shares in Rio Tinto plc and now has a holding of over 14% given its non-participation in the Company's significant share buyback programmes. This places Chinalco close to the 14.99% holding threshold agreed with the Australian Government at the time of its original investment in Rio Tinto."Perhaps some believe that Chinalco will get to 15%, then may be bid to take RIO private (that being the only way they can increase their holding.

Just look at the chart. It might not predict the future, but it shows a vast number of daily jumps of 2%+

I saw something briefly on Bloomberg yesterday about Iron ore / China so guess it's that. Must admit to being distracted and have not read up on everything yet so could be way off.

Who knows but the final sentence is interesting:-

"In the long term, however, Fitch Solutions still expects iron-ore prices to follow a downward trend, with prices expected to decrease to $50/t by 2032."

Personally expect iron ore prices to drift down over the years (where exactly to who knows) - this is why its crucial Rio uses its current (relatively) windfall profits from iron ore to transition into the green metals.
