27/11/2022 20:12 | Thanks tufty, Here's my take on electric cars - EV's. and the demand for lithium and copper. At the present EV's have to lug around a huge great heavy battery full of lithium. Not only si this a drag on performance but the vehicle has the inconvenience of having to frequently stop for lengthy recharging. The way forward is obviously to have EV's charge up on the go/run by picking up charge from, for example underneath the road. A bit like Scalextrix (do they still make them?) but there is no need for metal to metal contact as per the toy but charge can be made picked by (I don't know the exact terminology) the same tech as a mobile phone on a pad or your electric toothbrush. Ergo electric pads underneath the road surface. But these don't have to be continuous along the road as per the toys, but a small battery on board can be used between sections of road where there is no charging. There may be another way to achieve this but ultimately such a system of charging on the go is a better system than as present because the battery would be much smaller - smaller payload, and doing away with lengthy charging stops. BUT also the world's lithium resources are limited meaning there ain't enough to make all the batteries required for all the current vehicles in the world. However the need for copper (of which I understand there is still a lot in the ground still not mined) will continue to be a huge and getting bigger and bigger for many years to come as all the EV's will need copper for the motors and wiring to supply the means of charging 'on the go' however the technology is achieved. | eggbaconandbubble

23/11/2022 15:36 | Having already pioneered low-carbon aluminium with its Elysis process in Canada using hydropower, it is pleasing to read that Rio is also working on low-carbon steel making. A combination of biomass, eg wood and agri waste, and microwave technology, power source tbd. Where will the next huge source of clean energy be available? Well the iron ore is already coming from Pilbara. Somewhere pioneering a hydrogen energy hub, a massive offshore wind energy hub, or where else in the world is there abundant hydropower or nuclear energy and biomass waste? If this solves a chunk of China-India-Russia-J | marktime1231
