Any other good UK engineering companies? E.g. SPX.L

Hear Hear, cellars. Just lost Chloride and SSL, don't want to lose this one. Also strong relationship with local community and workforce, which is incredibly supportive.
However, the break up of the founders' shareholdings could ruin a good story.

While I agree Mitutoyo would be a good home for RSW, I also note with approval the appointment of Bill Whiteley as Senior Independent Director. He is the retired CEO of Rotork, which is another excellent "independent" company run on a business philosophy similar to RSW's. It is a further pointer that succession planning is in hand at RSW and that Sir DM gets good people around him.

A takeover is not the only possible way forward and the share price could rise for years after Sir DM's departure!!

Sir David M is well, well past retirement age. He dearly loves the business, but he can't go on for ever. He's a very clever man - so we must assume that he is giving this "ownership issue" some thought.

A sale to an equally paternalistic owner as himself (possibly Japanese - think about Mitutoyo) would perhaps be his preferred option.

FT quotes brokers suggesting Renishaw as a take over target; could only be possible if it had been put up for sale as the main Directors have a majority stake?...

Very steady climb in share price I suspect 'they' know that the results at the end of July will be good.

i-Pad?

Its most unlikely that RSW would be involved directly.

It has supplied probe based metrology equipment for plastic mouldings at Foxconn (the EMS manufacturers of the i-Pad), but that gear would have multiple customer uses.

johnrmshares. Excellent interim management statement 14/5/10 as I said I see no real problem in regaining all time high.

Great Company.

Doing very well (recovery)

Profits going up, strong management to follow on.

Mainly exporting, home market small, falling pounds boosting sales and profits.

Share broken out of trading range 620p plus.

All good news, in time I see no real problem in regaining all time high.

tangible assets 202p
when ageing board members leave what will happen to share price / company

most importantly UK government doing nothing to support embatterred engineering industry

Wouldn't have thought that the IMS would have warranted a 40p rise today.

IMHO the recovery in the share price is overdone.

richaims - we seem to have had a steady and strong recovery since you last posted. Something interesting going on?

As with one or two other shares, the consistency of the continuing downward trend suggests to me that it might be possible to buy these shares at a much lower price later this year.

One to keep watching - it should be easy to spot any consistent future sustainable reversal of the downward trend.
