HARES in the UK's smaller listed companies closed higher, defying the weaker trend on the FTSE 100, as takeover talk sparked rallies in Tanfield and GeneMedix.

Takeover hopes lifted GeneMedix. Shares in the bio-pharma group surged 7 3/4p or 57.4% to 21 1/4p. The company confirmed it is in talks with an international pharmaceutical products company, that might lead to a merger.

Investtech Analysis:

Neutral (Medium term) - Feb 18, 2004
Has risen 166% since the bottom on 6 Feb 2004 at 8.00. Has broken the ceiling of the falling trend, which indicates a slower initial falling rate. Has broken a resistance level and given a positive signal for the long-term trading range. The stock has support at p 18.40. Poor liquidity (traded 95% of the days, mean 9.39 mill per day) weakens the analysis.

'Sandoz extends custom production of biological compounds.

(c) 2004 Elsevier Engineering Information www.ei.org

Until now Sandoz has concentrated on producing and marketing generic drugs and on the custom production of biopharmaceutical compounds using microbial fermentation technology. However the company now has mammal cell culture capacities at its recently opened unit in Schaftenau, Austria and at its subsidiary Lek's new unit in Menges, Slovenia. The Schaftenau unit represents an investment of EUR 50 M+ and houses a 100 litres biopharmaceuticals production line (designed for synthesizing products for clinical trials) and 2 fermentation units with capacities of 3000 and 13,000 litres (for commercial production). This unit and the 13,000 litres microbial fermentation unit in Kundl, Austria which Sandoz opened in 2003 have created 100 new jobs. Production in Schaftenau will start by mid-2004 and has already attracted interest from a number of companies. The Menges unit represents an EUR 18 M investment. It has 2 200 litres perfusion fermentation units.

In addition to custom production, Sandoz is planning to invest in the biogenerics market which is expected to be worth $4 bn in 2005, with strong growth over the next few years. In 2005 50% of protein-based drugs on the market will have to compete with generic rivals, according to a report by analysts Datamonitor. The biological products whose patents are due to expire between 2004-2006 made sales of $14 bn in 2002. Sandoz is to launch its 1st biogeneric drug (the growth hormone Omnitrope) on the US market during 1Q 2004. The Swiss group is not the only company interested in their sector. At end 2003 Israeli company Teva announced its acquisition of US company Sicor for $3.4 bn which will give it access to the latter's biopharmaceutical production capacities. Other companies involved in the sector are Apotex, Cangene, Barr Labs, Ivax, LG Chemicals and Genemedix.'

Back to the question.... bid or merger?????

I'd definitely say bid... based on Merck being to big for a merger... assuming the gossip is right and it is Merck...
