Someone posted how RED should be offering to pay for the system and installaton with some sort of recoup. I totally disagree; what it needs is a few well plaed sales like this one in Oz that have potential to become 'reference sites'. Excellent news all round.

But as clean energy flourishes, the solutions from electric-vehicle companies and battery-makers have had a lot more to do with mining than Musk’s manifesto would suggest. Though an explosion in EVs and energy storage will allow countries to rely on less carbon-intensive energy, the extraction of essential ingredients to make cost-effective lithium-ion batteries generally leaves environmental and human devastation in its wake.

Industry leaders have come closer to solving how to store energy and power cars without fossil fuels on a large scale, but they’re just beginning to grapple with the moral implications of a clean energy industry supported by the ugly truths of child labor and pollution.

“It’s quite an interesting case, where you have the benefits of moving to green technology being outweighed, in some cases, when you look at the mine production,” said Stefan Sabo-Walsh, lead of commodities research at Verisk Analytics

The recent high profile announcement by Elon Musk’s Tesla (TSLA US) to construct the world’s largest lithium-ion battery project in South Australia (129MWh) has highlighted the significant potential for energy storage in the Australian market.

RED has previously announced its intention to enter this market in H2 2017. It has now delivered on this promise. The company believes that the country’s energy storage market will require investment of between A$20bn and A$30bn up until 2030. The extremely high cost of electricity in Australia means that the payback period of a RED flow machine could be as little as 1-2 years (assuming energy trading is implemented).

This system sale will build on the hybrid system work currently being carried out by RED in partnership with the University of Newcastle (UK) as part of a three-year programme announced in September 2016. The basic premise of such a system is that the lithium-ion battery component provides high power, when required, over a short duration (c20% of a customer’s overall requirements) with the vanadium flow machine providing the long duration output due to its much higher energy storage capability and lack of degradation (c80% of a customer’s overall requirements).

Pairing with lithium-ion battery technology should also make flow machine sales slightly easier, as customers are familiar with the more established lithium storage technology (despite its well-understood shortfalls).

Although no order value was quoted in the RNS, we estimate that this sale will be worth cUS$1m (cA$1.3m) to RED. Aside from being its first sale in Australia, this will provide an extremely high-profile marketing site for the stimulation of potential further orders in a country which will require significant investment in energy storage capacity for many years to come.

We maintain our BUY recommendation and target price of 22p.

SCRUTABLE we also have to consider the impact hydrogen can have on the Earth !!!

Because hydrogen atoms are so light, they can easily overcome a planet's gravitational pull and permanently escape into interplanetary space - in fact, that's how Mars ended up losing most of its water.

So when we release all that hydrogen from the water and it escapes into space, we will have nothing to drink.....!!!! sounds like a good idea to me !!!

SCRUTABLE there is no shortage of supply, mines are ramping up production and more mining companies starting to realise the potential of vanadium..

Where indeed are the British universities? Why, most Vice Chancellors could have one installed out of their pocket money and who could imagine a more appropriate location with tomorrow’s movers and shakers involved from the start.

The news flow is really hotting up...

In short order with had the Botswana sales, The Austrian "partner" thing, and now the Australian sales.

REDt sales graph is beginning to do the classic hockey stick shape and we've just turned the corner!

Morning all, great news.

Does anyone know what 1MW translates to interns of revenue please? Obviously margin/profit etc more complicated.

Thank you

Jeeze, the hybrid sale was much quicker than I expected. This deals with the only advantage lithium has over flow for most applications and really eats into the pure lithium current regime. It enables mass cheap storage And very high power power delivery for short periods of time and that is ideal for most large scale applications. The lithium pack I expect will be a bolt on and replaced at a 5 year service, leaving 90% of the machine untouched. Unlike the bid lithium systems which will likely need total replacement every 5 years. The start of a microcap becoming a big company. Good work Scott.
