- The Malian government has agreed to grant Randgold's Gounkoto mine a 50% corporate tax reduction for the next four years to support its development of a super pit which will be one of the largest opencast gold mines in Africa.

As a result of the latest stoppage and the time it will take to bring the operation back on line and at full tilt, Randgold said it would have to review its 290,000-ounce gold output forecast for the year.

Tongon, which produced 288,680 ounces of gold last year, was also hit by on-and-off strikes in April.

Two of Randgold's gold mines in neighbouring Mali have also been hit by strikes this year and a long-running dispute with the government over a claim of as much as $200 million in back-taxes.

WASHINGTON (Alliance News) - Gold prices moved lower in choppy trade on Friday and the dollar stood tall against its peers as investors braced for a strong reading on US GDP that could pave the way for a further rise in interest rates.

Spot gold was down 0.52% at USD1,218.90 an ounce and remained on track for its third straight weekly declines. US gold futures were down 0.64% at USD1,217.90 an ounce.

US second-quarter GDP growth is expected to be anywhere between four and five %, a very impressive number, thanks to the boost from the GOP tax cuts of late 2017. Strong data could boost the dollar and push bond yields up, denting appeal for bullion.

GOLD PLUNGES TO SETTLE AT 1-YEAR LOW

WASHINGTON (Alliance News) - Gold prices tumbled on Tuesday, extending losses to a third successive session, as the dollar strengthened against most major currencies after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's testimony before the Senate Banking Committee.

Gold futures for August delivery ended down USD12.40 or 1% at USD1,227.30 an ounce, the lowest close since 14 July 2017.

Powell, in his testimony before Congress maintained an upbeat outlook for the US economy and this very clearly suggests the Fed will continue to raise interest rates.
