Risk of ‘conflict and strife’ in Europe over energy crisis, EU deputy warns

Exclusive: Frans Timmermans says short-term return to fossil fuels needed to head off threat of civil unrest

Europe is in danger of highly damaging “very, very strong conflict and strife” this winter over high energy prices, and should make a short-term return to fossil fuels to head off the threat of civil unrest, the vice-president of the European Commission has warned.

Frans Timmermans, the second most senior official in the EU, said the threat of unrest this winter, a deliberate outcome of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, must take precedence over the climate crisis.

He said: “If our society descends into very, very strong conflict and strife because there is no energy, we’re certainly not going to make our [climate] goals. We’re certainly not going to get where we need to get if the lack of energy leads to strong disruption in our societies, and we need to make sure people are not in the cold in the coming winter.

Hopefully the Irish media will finally wake up to Ryan’s ludicrous energy transition strategy and non existent energy security plan, as it is becoming increasingly obvious that gas and fuel oil rationing is going to be causing catastrophic social and economic issues this Winter, there are also some very significant energy cost increases heading towards Irish consumers in the very near future, if the UK energy prices are anything to go by,….GL S

Oh hello, are the media beginning to wake up to the outright hypocrisy and abject lunacy of the greens.

fiach, have you nowt constructive to add or are you just being an anally retentive pest? Doubt wee Putin considers Ireland " a friendly nation" with all the Ukranian refugees enjoying a grand Irish welcome with all the trimmings and the Ukranian flag flying high and proud over Irish Government buildings. The wee man knows any notions of Irish neutrality are as spurious as his ongoing "military exercise"..

Click on individual commodity for commentary. Not sure whether Irish gas is linked to UK, European (TTF), or a mixture. Way higher than across the pond.

Putin Predicts Catastrophic Consequences For The Global Energy Market
By Julianne Geiger - Jul 08, 2022, 3:30 PM CDT

Russian President Vladimir Putin sees catastrophic energy consequences for Europe as sanctions against his country continue.

“We know that the Europeans are trying to replace Russian energy resources. However, we expect the result of such actions to be an increase in gas prices on the spot market and an increase in the cost of energy resources for end consumers,” Putin said at a televised meeting with senior officials on Friday.

The result, according to Putin, is that the sanctions will be felt more acutely by Europe than by Russia. “Further use of sanctions may lead to even more severe—without exaggeration, even catastrophic—consequences on the global energy market,” Putin said.

Europe has struggled to find a surefire way to punish Russia for its invasion of Ukraine without feeling the pain itself, given that Europe has relied on Russia for roughly 40% of its natural gas needs. Major European economies such as Germany are already grappling with power company bankruptcies as they source higher-cost natural gas from sources other than Russia. Europe is making a mad dash to refill its natural gas in storage before the 2022 heating season kicks in, but it is finding that those stocks are coming at a steep price.

Russia has already cut off the natural gas spigot to “unfriendly221; countries that have failed to make arrangements to pay for Russia’s gas with a rubles account with Gazprombank. Bulgaria, Finland, and Poland have all had the flow of gas from Russia cut off, along with numerous buyers such as Orsted and Shell.

Europe is now mulling a price cap on Russian oil to punish Russia by restricting its revenues while maintaining its supply of crude, but the details are complex and would require buy-in from other countries, including China and India. Critics of the plan suggest that such a plan is nonsense and has little chance of working.

EU taxonomy CDA for nuclear and gas to be included has been voted through, a very sensible outcome considering the current global crisis and the need to ensure pragmatic transition, it will be interesting to note if this will be a catalyst for Minister Ryan,..GL S

It's just inertia, their name isn't the one that gets the press so PVR lead and eventually LOGP will catch up. That's the theory at least, and should make it an opportunity while it lags

Ceph, agreed, I am sure they wouldn't and in some respects LOGP and their major shareholders are in a very strong position, as they can to some degree sit back and let PVR/BOE do all of the hard yards and then be well positioned to take the rewards and it is a surprise to see them so overlooked,...GL S

Swizz, I would hope LOGP don't entertain a lowball. They also have very deep pocketed shareholders who have been supporting them over the years without question. My guess is they will either take 20% of the new entity BOE and effectively merge with PVR, or be LOGP as partner to BOE
