Bosch to invest €1bn into fuel cell technology

Bosch’s CEO believes the market for green hydrogen in the EU will be worth €40bn ($48bn) by 2030 with annual growth rates of 65%.

Dr. Volkmar Denner made the comment at Bosch’s annual press conference where he also made a staggering estimate that the market for mobile fuel cell components in particular could be worth around €18bn ($21bn) by the end of this decade.

Denner said “Bosch is already hydrogen-ready” and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to invest €1bn ($1.2bn) into fuel cell technology – an emerging part of the EU hydrogen market – from 2021 to 2024.

With the investment, Bosch will look to put 100 stationary fuel cell plants into operation this year supplying electricity to users such as data centres, industrial manufacturers and residential areas.

Denner believes that Bosch is prepared and ready to spearhead this growing market, “We have what it takes to be a leader in this market as well.”

Expanding on this, Denner referenced the recent joint venture with China’s Qingling Motor Group which will see both companies produce fuel cell power trains with a test fleet of 70 trucks set to be on the roads before the end of 2021.

In addition to this, Bosch’s previous success with the recently operational fuel cell plant in the centre of Bamberg, Germany, at the end of March 2021, will be used as a reference point into the ever growing, lucrative hydrogen market in the EU.

The target areas highlighted, pps are already selling into.
From a standing start in 2021 Bosch suddenly look like Ford and GM waking up to the threat of Tesla ten years ago.

Very likely there will be further costly R&D at PPS buddy, healthy competition will provide the impetus...But I wasn't aware that Bosch was now developing its own fuel-cell products, surprising as both initial and ongoing costs are excessive and they seem to be 'Outclassed' with competitors unless like the Israelis they've been developing behind 'Closed Doors' for the last decade or so...

Surely no more than normal R&D, Reb_Ban ? but if you can show me the Statement or balance sheet figures ! i'd be happy to read.

As HB has stated - 'incremental stuff' that does not sound costly to me !.

Yes BOSCH will profit from the CWR investment. It got in big when CWR was being hammered by the shorters and De-Rampers. Yet now ten yrs later it has finaly decided the time is right to make its own product.


Finaly, It's Great to have so many new posters on this thread.

Surely being an investor here you're aware that Fuel-cell technology is costly to develop, maintain and store Tenapen?

...As HB has stated, the 'Buzz' really is for the future socioeconomic impact and PPSs early range of products will be requiring some significant capital spending to realise in the future...

By the way, Bosch is actually well-placed to appreciate those investments at this relatively early stage in the technology...

Hi Zingaro, I didn't explain so well in my earlier post. I was saying Bosch are so far behind because they are only now going to invest €1 billion in fuel cell technology. Twenty years behind PPS, ITM & CWR among others.

A rising tide lifts All clean tech stocks together.

The science and surface technology of fuel cells is all fairly old hat.
What's new is the engineering and the catalytic chemistry involved.
I doubt there will be any major steps forward; only marginal, incremental stuff.
However, the social economics is what is changing the landscape.

Tenapen: i agree with your second post. I was only pointing out that bosch was not years behind as it had bought into cwr’s and powercell’s technology.

Repeat, Bosch is cash rich - rather than designing / making its own products, it buys large percentages in early adopters. It got a great deal buying cwr after it crashed but it does not have its own clean tech side of its business - please correct me if I'm wrong.

No. Bosch is not years behind. It is collaborating with ceres in the boiler market (also owns about 17% of the equity), and with powercell (sweden) in the automobile market (it has about 11% of the equity). For bosch its a question of scaling up into mass production.

However, PPSs newer concepts require 'Significant' funding buddy and while the company is still not profitable, dilution probably awaits in the future which is to the detriment of existing investors...Fuel-cell technology companies already have ridiculous forward valuations!

Hi Reb_Ban, your probably correct.

When eqt is holding its high share price. Also AFC who have only ever made one sale of £1m is holding its own. Yet PPS with multiple sales / preferred supplier agreements and with multi award winning products goes down. It can't be a coincidence !.

Just means my next buy, I get more shares for my pennies :-)
